I flopped back down on my bed as I listened to some music. It had been a few days since we got to Greenland, and what Mom said before was so far not true at all. Every day, I mostly just laid around and listened to the same track of Queen, Elton John, and ABBA music. It was fine for me, because that's how most days were spent regardless of where I was.
"Ash, lets go do something!" Ben complained as he hung on to my arm. "You never want to do anything!"
I pushed the 14 year old away. "Go away, Ben, I'm trying to relax."
Ben huffed. "Mom, please tell Ash to come ice skating with me!" He begged. "She needs to go outside for once."
Mom walked over and crouched down in front of me. "Just go out for an hour," She said, trying to be as convincing as possible.
I shook my head no stubbornly. I knew I was being annoying, but I really didn't want to go ice skating, and I was difficultwhen it came to these things.
Mom thought for a moment. "If you go, I'll give you money for some candy." She said.
I raised an eyebrow. "Is that a bribe?" I questioned. Mom simply kept smiling. I finally shrugged. "Ok, just for the candy," I conceded. Taking off my headphones, I placed them in a drawstring bag, as well as my Walkman just in case I got bored, which was likely to happen. Ben grabbed me by the arm and pulled me to the door. "Ok, bye Mom," I said as we left our lodge room.
It was freezing outside. Even with my multiple layers, and perhaps the most obnoxiously-big jacket, I was cold. Outside of the place we were staying was a huge lake of sorts, which didn't seem like it was owned by anyone in particular, but it did have some guy renting out ice skates next to it. I whipped out some money from my pocket and gave the man some money to rent our skates. I shoved the rest in my pocket and tugged on my shoes.
Ben slid by like a real ice skater while I more or less waddled around like a helpless penguin. "I hate ice skating." I murmured to myself as everyone looked at my sorry attempt for skating. I gave an awkward wave at everyone, which distracted me from what I was doing and I fell on the ice. Widening my eyes, I heard a slight crack from beneath me. The ice tumbled in on itself and I plopped into the water and flailed my arms around wildly. After a few moments I stiffened and stopped moving due to shock. My heart beating loudly in my ears, and my chest burning for air, I managed to pull myself to the surface, my whole body feeling as though it was limp. I gasped for breath and looked around, but everything was different. There was no one here.
I kept scrambling around aimlessly, feeling every inch of myself go numb. A current drew by a piece of ice, which I was able to half-pull myself onto. After I climbed on, I peered around in each direction, my heart still beating fast, and my breathing spiraling out of control. It wouldn't be long before something serious happened to my health. Away in the distance, I saw a strange looking ship towering above the water. "A ship... a ship!" I croaked to myself before frantically waving my arms around to get someone's attention. The ship drew closer, and in my efforts to save myself, I passed out.
