29 | Can't Close My Eyes

When we got outside the men Hopper called finally arrived and took care of us. I was sitting with Max and Robin as we were already done with being looked at. Max was holding an ice pack to her face while mine was to my head. With our free hands, we held each other's leaning on one another. None of us talked to each other about what just happened inside the mall.

I see Steve was finished being looked at as he makes his way towards us. Our eyes meet and he quickens his pace stopping in front of me between my legs. I let go of Max's hand to wrap my arms around his neck as he holds me close to him. I look over his shoulder and see Joyce hugging Will crying as she sees El looking for Hopper.

I notice El start to cry and I let go of Steve hopping down running over to comfort her. "No." She cries into my chest as I rub her back.

"I'm sorry. Let it out." I start to cry once again.

I couldn't believe Hopper was gone too. Ever since my father left Hopper took his place for me. He treated me like a daughter like he has been with El. Most of the party and my mom didn't know how close the two of us were actually. "I'm going to miss him too El." I cry rubbing her back before Max pulls her into a hug.

"SKYLAR!" Dustin shows up with Erica walking over to her brother. He runs into my arms hugging me to death. "Are you okay? What happened?" He asks looking up at me and I can't help but continue to cry while holding him. "Oh, Sky." He rubs my back.

We all ended up getting rides homes by the police. Max begged to come home with Dustin and me which I was fine with that. When we got home they explained to my mother that we were at the mall when it caught on fire. Max called her mom and told her that she was staying with me tonight so they wouldn't worry about where she was. I end up sharing my bed with Max, who cried herself asleep in my arms. Every time I tried to close my eyes all I could see was what happened to Billy over and over. I couldn't fall asleep the whole night so I just stared into the darkness of my room.

The next morning while Max was still asleep I left my room to get a glass of water. "Sky, I know you don't want to talk about but if you need someone. I'm here for you." Dustin says walking into the kitchen.

"I know you are Dustin but I just don't feel like crying right now." I pat him on top of the head as there was a knock at the door. "Oh hey, Steve." I open the door for him to come in.

"I brought your car home. Good thing you gave me the spare key." He smiles but I didn't feel like smiling back. "You didn't sleep did you?" He gets serious and I nod my head.

"I can't close my eyes, Steve. Every time I do, I just see it happening all over again." I let a tear slip as Steve holds me in his arms.

"I believe you do, but you need some sleep too. You went through a lot last night." He kisses the top of my head.

Once Max woke up, Steve said we would drive her home so her mother could take care of her. When we parked outside the house Max grabbed my shoulder. "Can you come inside for a minute?" She asked me and Steve nodded his head.

"I'll be here waiting." Max and I get out and walk to the door and her mother pulls us inside.

"Baby, are you okay? The men showed up last night after you called and told us Billy passed away." She says making Max tear up again and I try my hardest not to. "And Skylar, I knew you two were close friends." Her mom smiled at me.

"We actually were closer than friends." I say as Neil walked into the room staring at me. "His last words to me were I love you." I swallow the lump in my throat and Max grabs my hand.

"Well then, I believe you should look through his stuff in his room and take what you want." She moves so I can walk to his room.

Max and I walk down the hall and she goes to her room while I go to Billy's. "I'm shocked how his last words were I love you." Neil walks into his son's room as I sit on Billy's bed.
