Chapter 39

Hiccup's POV

"Me? Did he really think I would become this 'all mighty dragon slayer' or something?" I questioned.

"He did." Gobber began. "But when you were in the arena and said dragons didn't have to be killed, he thought differently." I raised my eyebrow. "He saw how much you took after Valka, and by the look on his face I knew he was full of worry. He thought you were going to be taken like Valka. And he couldn't loose the last piece of family he had." I sighed.

"I don't know what to say."

"Just go home Hiccup. Relax with your family." Gobber said with a smile as he pat my shoulder. I smiled and stood up.

"Thank you Gobber." I said as I turned and walked to the door.

Astrid's POV

"I think you should go Hiccup. It'll be so much fun. Everyone will love you."

"I can't Astrid. I can't miss anything here. I missed the first one and I don't want to miss the second."

"Hiccup if anything happens I'll be in good hands. I'll have the gang, Valka, Gobber and Mercy."

"But you wouldn't have me." I sighed and sat down and lowered my head to meet his eyes, which were staring at the floor. "Would you want Gobber to tell them to come here? We can get everyone to help prepare for them."

"Would it make much of a differnce?"

"Of course! You'll still be on Berk where you can reach me at all times. So you'll never miss a thing. Because I'll be right by your side." I smiled. He smiled and brought his head up.

"I can talk to Gobber and see if he can have everyone gather here. But I'll go over there later I just want to relax."

"Is something bothering you?"

"No it's just, I can't get what Gobber told me out of my mind."

"What did he tell you?"

"He told me this story that my dad always told me when I was growning up, and I guess my dad based the story off of what he thought would be future me." He stated. I could tell this was something he was deeply thinking about.

"Anything else?"

"He also told me that when I said we didn't have to kill dragons in front of the entire village, that my dad saw my mother in me. He filled with fear because he thought I was going to be taken too."

"Since you had the same opinion as your mom." I finished for him. He simply nodded. "Why is this bothering you?"

"I don't know." He sighed and sat down in a chair, looking down at his feet. "Maybe it's because he could've actually lost me."

"What?" I asked skeptically.

"Well, when you came to the cove that day and met Toothless," he started. He looked unsure about saying this. I nodded. "I was gonna run away."

"Hiccup what?! Why?!"

"I was going to take off with Toothless and find somewhere else to stay. Probably just an uninhabited island. I would've built a house and lived with Toothless for the rest of my life." He explained sadly.

"Hiccup that's completely-"

"Insane. I know." He finished for me. He sighed and looked up. "I just couldn't bear having to think about the shame my dad would feel when I couldn't kill a dragon. I had always been telling him I wanted to kill dragons and be a Viking and when I tried with Toothless, I- I just couldn't."
