Jacobs words stung in my head like a tattoo to my brain.

"Are you forgetting something?" My dad asked looking at me across the counter.

"Huh?" I asked not playing attention.

"Where were you last night?" My dad asked.

Jacob and I decided to withhold the truth from our parents with a little bribery to the bus driver he withheld the truth too.

"I already told you-"

"Out late with Daina, already checked, her mother said you weren't there, now the truth please"

Never tell me to withhold evidence from anybody because I will spill my guts out.

That sounded a bit disturbing didn't it?

"Jacob and I broke up so I ran away to have some space and alone time" I manage to say without telling the whole truth.

At least one little part of it was true…

"That little shit" my dad said bringing me back to reality. "I'm going to fuck that little bastard up"

"No, no dad don't it's fine plus do you want more problems with Lisa?"

Ever since the wedding my dads been calling her cell but she won't pick up.

Was it really that bad I was dating her son? I mean I'm not anymore so does that mean my dad can get his fiance back.

Fuck, I'm so selfish… this is why Jacob flipped out on me. He wanted his mother to be happy and he couldn't handle her not be happy for his own selfish reasons.

"I guess this means you and Lisa are a thing again" I sighed.

My dad looks at me puzzled. 

I laugh. "Don't look too surprise she only broke off the wedding because of me and Jacob… I won't get in your way anymore"

With this I ran out the door crashing into someone trying to get in.

"I'm sorry" I cried out. Shit the tears are already sliding down my face.

"Woah did I hit you that hard?" he asked looking at me. I glimpse up to see…

Chase?

"I'm here to return Lucky… since you're back from the wedding…" He says shyly.

I look down to see Lucky on a leash wagging his tail.

*FLASH BACK*

"I'm here to aplogoize"

"An apology isn't enough, Jacob"

"I know that's why I got you Lucky"

"what?"

"He will guard you when I can't"

"Jacob I can't-"

"You will and you will love it"

*FLASH BACK ENDS*

"L-lucky" I stutter out.

Chase looked at me puzzled. "You okay?"

"Y-yes thanks for watching Lucky Chase" I say stumbling on my words.

Chase laughs.

"What?"

"Well that's what the animal shelter does… and it costs money"

"Oh wow okay" I search my pockets for some cash when I couldn't find any I realize I had to go back inside. "Be right-"

"Take your time" Chase interrupted smiling.

I wiped an old tear away as a smile approached my face. I walked into the house then quickly ran up the stairs to search through my room.

"Where art tho money?" I murmer out loud searching the room.

Under my pile of dirty clothes … nope

On the nightstand… nada

I searched everywhere for cash… damn I need to be more organized.

Finally I found some in an envelope in my desk. Tossing the random envelope away and grasping the money I ran down the stairs.

I could hear people talking rather harshly to each other through the front door.

"You again" someone growled.

No… Jacob. I felt obligated to hide until he was gone but I couldn't let Jacob yell at innocent Chase especially since he watched Lucky.

I held my breath and opened the door.

Jacob and Chase glanced at me.

"Nicole…" Jacob mumbled.

Ignoring him I looked straight at Chase. "How much do I owe you?"

"50 dollars" He stated calmly.

"50 dollars… wow" I mumbled as I counted the tens and handed it to Chase.

"Thanks" Chase stated taking the money, handing the leash to me I shook my head.

"Huh?" Chase asked confused.

"Give it to him" I gesture to Jacob without looking at him.

"You sure Nicole?" Chase asked.

I nod my head. "I'm positive"

"What" Jacob states. "Nicole you can't-"

"Keep him, I don't need protection from anyone" I waved goodbye to Chase and ran back to my bedroom to let the heldback tears fall.
