~Sara~

"What?" a couple of the boys asked in unison. Sara wanted to slap herself. She also held a bit of a grudge against Winston for always taking Gally's side back in the Glade, but she needed to control herself.

"I—I mean, I didn't kill anyone. The grenades were supposed to hold them back to give us time to escape," she rambled. "I would never kill anyone, Crank or not."

"We gotta sleep," Brenda muttered. "There's only space for two people in that car, so Thomas and I will sleep there. Rest of you, scatter out on the sand. We got a lot of walkin' to do tomorrow."

Sara could see the disgruntled faces everyone was making, but they were too exhausted to initiate a war with Brenda. Even Sara felt like she could drop to the floor right where she stood and fall asleep immediately.

She made sure to lie down close to Newt, just because she was that kind of girlfriend that would freak out unless she was sure he was safe. He wasn't a kid anymore, but the reason she accepted this new mission was to watch out for him, and for the others, and stop anything WICKED planned that involved any of them getting hurt.

Thomas and Brenda fully engaged in a conversation as the others went to sleep in silence. Sara personally struggled to fall asleep because of the whispering, but soon enough, the exhaustion caught up to her.

Brenda woke them up.

It was still dark out, so Sara assumed it wasn't dawn yet.

"Come on, let's go! Jorge and the others are most likely gonna meet us on the other side of the city. We have to keep moving."

Frypan groaned before rubbing his eyes. "You know where we're going?"

She gave him a dry look. "Of course I do. Follow me," Brenda repeated, a bit more irritated.

Newt was about to stand up, but Sara could tell his foot was sore from all the walking and running they did the day before. It was clear on his face, scrunched up in pain as he slowly tried to lift himself up.

Sara walked up to him and offered him a hand. He hesitated at first, staring at her for a couple of seconds before he finally took her hand. He grunted as she helped pull him all the way up.

"Thank you," he breathed out. His eyes seemed to linger on her as she nodded once in response.

To escape the situation, she walked away from him and approached Thomas. "Hey," she nudged his arm. He turned to her in surprise. "You and Brenda had a long chit-chat last night. What about?"

He turned away from her to stare ahead as he replied. "The usual. She was telling me more about herself."

"You like her?" Sara smirked, wondering if he'd forgotten all about Teresa. It wasn't that she'd feel happy if he did, because she knew it affected him, but she firmly believed he deserved better than what Teresa did to him.

Thomas frowned. "No. No, I don't. She seems nice, that's all." His cheeks turned a bright pink shade. They kept walking in silence until he asked something that made absolutely no sense to Sara. "Did you also know about the signs?"
