~Sara~
She listened to muffled voices around her while she struggled to open her eyes.
Sara wondered if maybe that was how it felt to rise from the dead, but she would probably never know. All she knew was that she wasn't expecting to be breathing again, and the sensation didn't feel as real until she actually snapped her eyes open.
I'm alive. Wow.
She looked around and the lights were almost blinding. Her eyes began adjusting enough for her to look down at herself lying on the bed.
Her eyes followed the long plastic tubes that stuck out from her arm, her chest, and the sides of her neck, until she saw the silver IV pole next to the bed, a clear-like fluid drip dropping inside the sack, continuing its journey back into the tubes, and into her body. She reached up to her face and there was another tube crossing her cheeks, which settled on her nose, and traveled behind her ears.
And finally, Newt popped into her mind as a natural instinct now.
But right at that moment, Minho and Thomas approached her, taking a seat next to her bed. They both looked at her worriedly, but with obvious relief.
"You good, shank?" asked Minho, and she nodded hesitantly.
"W—where's Newt?" Her voice was croaky, and she wasn't even sure if they could hear her clearly.
"He's still out, but Becca's with him," Thomas answered her. "She had to isolate him so she could concentrate. The whole thing's pretty risky, Sara, but that's all we know."
Sara didn't know whether to consider that good news or not. Either way, it seemed way too quick for Rebecca to be done with her. And she wondered if she still needed to be wired to the bed for the whole trip, or if Newt would wake up—even better—if the cure would work.
"How long has it been?"
"Hours. It's nighttime, and everyone else is out flat," said Minho, and Sara gave them a curious look.
"Have you guys even slept at all?"
They both looked at each other and nodded, but the dark circles under their eyes indicated otherwise.
Sara was tired of having people go to certain means and ends because of her; she appreciated the commitment, but they needed to take care of themselves too.
"Go to sleep," she said, basically ordering them to do so.
Minho shook his head. "Slim it. We're watching over you while Rebecca's busy. She's coming to take more blood soon, and then she'll inject you with some klunk."
"Yeah, she's doing it by intervals," added Thomas. "And she warned us that you might start to get pale and feel lightheaded after a while. That's why we're on duty with you."
That was gonna take much longer than she'd thought. That didn't give them enough time before they reached Alaska. Time was also running out for when WICKED would discover the berg's location, and Vince wouldn't want to wait that long to strike his move against them with his people.
She still wondered about Vince's plans with all the Immunes he'd gathered and whether there was a reason to be concerned about any aspect of those plans.
"Is your eyesight good?" asked Minho, and Sara frowned at the spontaneity of the question.
"Why?" she asked, but Minho shushed her immediately.
"Shut it and answer, shuck-face," he said, but his smirk failed to maintain the seriousness he wanted to display.
"I can see your ugly face in high resolution, so I guess it's good," she said, staring at him curiously. Thomas snorted.
