~Rebecca~
She wasn't sure she could do this.
After the incident with Dr. Lynne a few days ago, Rebecca had been severely sleep-deprived.
To top things off, her dear girl almost got thrown into the Maze. Rebecca feared she wouldn't have the strength to save Sara if she'd been pushed inside, but she knew she would've tried to guide her safely back to the Glade just like the first time if necessary.
And now Sara actually needed her help, but Rebecca was worried. With Janson being more cautious about watching over Rebecca, it was far more difficult to hide her private investigation of the Glade. After all, she was ruining years of effort and preparation for the trials.
Most events were going according to WICKED's original plan with Gally, and with the Grievers attacking them each night. That was not how she intended to solve things, however.
Janson was gonna pay a mighty price. She let the Grievers take and kill one of the Gladers last night, simply because she was forced to satisfy his disgusting desires.
But tonight was the night she actually had to act. Sara and the rest of the Gladers would not fight alone.
This also meant that today was the day Janson would probably find out his experiment had been tampered with.
Her only option was the one she'd looked forward to avoid the most, but it was all she had at hand.
Hence, she was standing before the door to the chancellor's office.
The woman called Rebecca inside as she knocked, and she struggled to push the door open, much to her embarrassment.
Everything was much more difficult with an arm in a cast—a reminder that a person had to die in order for her to avoid getting caught. She hated herself for that.
Once Rebecca entered, Ava looked up from her computer, and her face lit up with glee at the sight of her. "Rebecca! It's such a pleasure to see you in here, darling."
Rebecca groaned on the inside, and she plastered a fake smile onto her face. "Of course."
Ava's smile faded a little, but she nonetheless asked in a cheerful tone, "What brings you here, my dear? Is your arm feeling any better?"
"Let's skip the drama, Ava. I wouldn't be here had I not desperately needed your help," she said, urgently tapping her foot. Ava raised her eyebrows and awaited her request. "Janson has a niece," Rebecca blurted out.
"What?" Her eyes widened.
"Calm down, she's in the Maze, but he doesn't know," said Rebecca.
"And I'm barely getting informed now? What do you need from me exactly?" Ava asked, knowing perfectly well that Rebecca would never visit her just to chit-chat.
Rebecca sighed. "He'll kill me if he finds out I was the one who sent her in. I need you to make him think it was you who ordered me to do it. That it was necessary—which it was."
No, it wasn't, Rebecca said in her head.
"Of course it was necessary!" Ava agreed. "We need as many children as possible," she added, and Rebecca rolled her eyes. "May I know which Subject she is?"
