Chapter 9 – Close enough

Delilah woke up in the same bed she woke up the day before. She could smell the musky male scent on the pillow which clearly was Zach's. She involuntarily inhaled the scent and sighed. She threw the pillow to the side and got out of bed. She freshened up and went out wandering around the huge house.

As she walked down the stairs she could see the courtyard from the huge French windows on the opposite wall.

And her breath caught, there was Zach shirtless and training with his men. She walked down the stairs in a trance and moved in close to the window and watched his powerful muscles move as he swinged his arm to hit his opponent.

Sweat glistened on his back and the muscles on his arms bunched. His eyes were narrowed and on his opponent. Watching him fight was hypnotic. He had so much grace for such a huge man.

He turned to swing a punch at the man’s jaw and locked eyes with her. She immediately tried to warn him that another one was behind him but he didn’t need the help. He caught the other man’s hand and toppled both of them down his eyes still locked to hers.

She gasped out loud and backed away from the window breaking eye contact and turned and walked away as fast as she could.

She reached the kitchen as she followed the smell of freshly baked bread and coffee. Her mouth watered smelling fresh bread. She walked into the kitchen and saw Martha the cook pouring a cup of coffee from the jar.

Martha looked up and Delilah smiled up at her brightly

“Good morning!” she said

“Well good morning dear! Want some coffee?” she asked smiling back at Delilah. Martha started having a soft spot for her the minute she set eyes on Delilah.

“Yes I would! And that wonderful bread I can smell all the way till the courtyard.” She said sitting down.

“You went to the courtyard? Aren’t they training? Zach is still there isn’t he? You should have asked him to come for breakfast”

“Umm….I didn’t go into the courtyard, I saw them from the French windows. But why are they training?” Delilah asked getting comfortable on the chair and rested her chin on her hands.

“You know self-defense and everything! The world isn’t that safe! And we are a small clan so we protect each other.” Martha said and placed a plate full of bread, jam and scrambled eggs with a hot cup of coffee in front of her ending the topic.

Delilah picked up her coffee and was about to drink it when the kitchen door opened revealing a sweaty Zach with one hand on his head, his fingers running through his hair.

Zach looked up and saw Delilah holding a cup of coffee midway to her mouth and stood there staring at her. Martha walked up to him and started pulling him towards the table. Delilah knew it was hard to budge Zach from where he was standing. You can’t pull or push him unless he lets you and he was letting Martha do it.
