XXVII. The She-Devil That Ruined My Life

CARTER

As I hold my phone tightly in my hand, I begin to wonder if this is a good idea or not. I look up at Nate and Mike as we stand in Mike's office at the sheriff's station. They both nod their heads at me, encouraging me to continue on with the plan.

I knew my ex Vanessa wouldn't turn herself in willingly after what she did. As soon as she thought there was any consideration of her being a suspect, she'd run. Luckily though, she doesn't know who Heather is, that her brother is the Chief Deputy who has a means and the resources to figure this out. So I came up with this plan to lure her in, using me as the bait. I take a deep breath and dial the number of the she-devil who ruined my life the two years I was with her and still trying to ruin even now. I'd like to say I'm surprised she'd stoop this level of low, but I'm honestly not.

"You finally called!" she beams through the phone, making me cringe away from it for a split second. I won't be able to hear correctly out of that ear for the next couple minutes. I can sense the excitement in her voice that her plan worked. So far the bait is working.

"Vanessa, I got your text, I want to meet up somewhere so we can talk. Meet me at the park okay?" I speak in my smoothest voice possible, really leading her on. I hate to admit I've got the charm and looks to swoon any girl I want but I refuse use it willingly on just anyone. Honestly there's only one girl in mind that I'd ever want to swoon into obedience and she's currently laid up in a hospital bed thanks to the psychotic bitch on the other line. Calm down Carter, get your head back in check.

"Really?! You want to talk?" I hear the curiosity in her voice as she takes in my request.

"So it must have worked! Yes! I'll come meet you. Oh I've missed you Carter," she beams frantically and I begin to ball my fist in anger. The fact she is already admitting to hurting Heather makes me want to strangle the life from her. Whoa, dark thoughts...calm down asshole.

"I've missed you too. Meet me in twenty minutes please," I immediately hang up the phone before she can sense the anger in my voice and nod towards Mike and Nate, letting them know the plan is a-go.

Nate is currently off-duty, so he can't make the arrest, pissing him off. I know he's love to slap the cuffs on both Vanessa and Bryan for doing this to his little sister. I don't blame him, his baby sister almost got killed and is under suspicion for drunk driving thanks to these two morons. When we show up to the park, I sit down on one of the benches and adjust my shirt collar. I have a wire strapped to me while Nate and Mike sit in his unmarked truck, recording and listening in.

Before they can even make the arrest, they have to catch her admitting to the crime since there's no actual proof she did it. Unfortunately there's no cameras of the parking lot outside of Phillip's market to show her actually tampering with Heather's car. Yes there's the text messages from her on my phone but we can't go on that alone, she could be talking about anything and it wouldn't be sufficient evidence. There's squad cars on stand-by a few blocks over so they don't scare her off, if there's a reason for back-up. I'm not even sure if she's alone in all of this.

As I sit here waiting on this uncomfortable park bench, I'm honestly thankful I'm not a cop. I don't think I could handle the stress of this. I'll take a fire any day of the week. At least with that, it's always predictable a predictable outcome and there's always an easy solution to maintaining it and extinguishing it.
