VI. Sexy Mummy On The Back Of My Big Red Truck

"Elena, I am so sorry! I'll somehow pay you back as soon as I can for the damages. God I'm such an idiot," Heather groans and puts her fingers through her hair and pulls at the roots. She's beating herself up for what happened.

"Baby it's fine. It was just an accident and the insurance will cover it. Don't worry about it. These things happen sometimes and I'm just thankful you didn't get hurt baby," Elena wraps her arm around her tighter and kisses her forehead. A smile erupts from my lips at the care Elena has for this girl.

"Excuse me miss? I came over to make sure you're okay. That was a pretty bad incident in there," I smile down at her. She smiles up at me and nods her head. Suddenly she grimaces in pain and that's when I notice the first degree burns on her forearms.

I gently grab her hands and hold her arms out straight as I assess the situation. Thankfully they're only first degree burns but they still hurt regardless. She looks up at me through her lashes and I can tell by looking in her eyes that at any moment she could break.

"Can you walk?" when she nods, I motion for her to follow me and she willingly does.

When we get back to the engine, I grab her by her waist and sit her on the tailgate. She looks up at me with wide eyes and a chuckle escapes my lips at her expression.

"Sorry, it's just easier for you to sit up here instead of kneeling down. Just trying to save my back," I wink at her and she blushes.

"Oh it's fine. I just haven't been handle like that by a man in a long time," she giggles and crosses her leg over the other one as she watches me grab the first aid kit from one of the compartments from the side of the truck.

I laugh and my eyes widen from her remark. This girl is something else. I shrug out of my coat and throw it over the side of the truck and when she sees my exposed tattoos, her eyes widen and she licks her lips. I smirk to myself as I grab some latex gloves and snap them on.

I gather some burn cream on my fingers and gently rub it onto her burns. She flinches at the contact and giggles.

"It's cold. But it feels good. I didn't even realized i was burnt," she sighs and pinches the bridge of her nose. I can tell she's got a lot of things on her mind.

"It's the adrenaline. Once it calms and leaves your body, that's when you finally feel it," I inform her with a smile and finish rubbing the cream on both of her arms.

I grab the medicated dressing and place it over her forearms before wrapping them with gauze. She looks down at her arms and begins laughing. I look at her curiously as I gather everything into a small trash bag and snap my gloves off.

"I look like a mummy," she giggles and shakes her head.

When she pulls the band from her ponytail and her thick curls fall over her shoulders, my breath catches once more at her beauty. She runs her fingers through her hair and sighs. I lean up against the tailgate next to her and cross my arms. She's all good to go but I find myself wanting to be around her, as if I'm drawn to her by some invisible force.

"Everything okay? You seem like you've got a lot on your mind. I know you don't know me, but I'm a pretty good listener if you need to vent," I assure her with a grin and she smiles up at me while playing with the ends of her long curls.

"Have you ever been hit with the overwhelming feeling that life will never get better? Like the balance of life is so off tilt that there's no longer any good left?" she sighs and crosses her legs up underneath her and rest her elbows on her inner thighs, deep in thought.

"At one point in my life, yes, but things eventually got better. It just takes time and patience," I look down at her with concern.

It's hard to think that this girl is feeling that down and out about life to come up with that conclusion. Sure there's ups and downs in life but things always get better, even if it's just a little. I'm about to ask her what she's so sad about that's got her thinking this way when a big four door tan truck pulls up in front of Miller's.

"Shit," she mumbles and jumps down from the back of the engine. When I stand up straight next to her I smirk to myself at the difference in height.

A man in a sheriff's uniform jumps out of the truck and walks over to the owner, Elena. They exchange some words and she points over to where Heather and I are at as we make our way towards them. A look of relief floods his face as he makes his way over.

"Shit Hev are you okay?" he asks her and wraps his arms around her. Boyfriend?

"Yes Nate, I'm fine. It was just an accident. Did you call mom too?" she gets a look of annoyance at him.

Mom? So this must be her brother that Chief was talking about. So her brother is a sheriff deputy? I'm still new in town and don't know much about anyone here aside from my own crew at the station.

"Of course I did. I didn't know the whole situation. Just Elena called me to tell me what was going on and that you were pretty broken up about it," he gently rubs her shoulder and when he looks down at her bandaged arms his eyes widen.

"What is this? Did you get hurt?" he grabs her hands and looks closer at her arms.

"I'm fine Nate, just a little burn is all. Nothing too serious," she assures him and smiles up at her brother.

"Nothing too serious Hev? This is really fucking serious. You could've been seriously injured," he scolds her and I can't help but agree. But at the same time I can tell she's getting overwhelmed with emotions right now and at any moment, she's going to break.

Nate recognizes it and sighs as he pulls her into his arms. He gently rubs her back as she buries her face into his shoulder. I can tell right off the bat they're really close siblings. I smile at the thought of this girl being a family kind of girl. That to her, family is the most important thing in the world. I like that.

Suddenly an SUV pulls up and a woman climbs out of the driver side and quickly grabs a little girl from the back seat. Nate looks over at her and waves for her to come over. Heather turns around and I can tell she's about to cry at the sight of this woman. Just by looking at her, I can tell she's related to the both of them.

"Mom," Heather cries out and wraps her arms around her mom. Nate comes over and grabs the little girl from his mom's arms and holds her close. As I look at this little girl, I get this overwhelming feeling that she looks like someone I once knew.

"Daddy, is Auntie okay?" she asks sweetly. Daddy? So this is his daughter. Cute little girl with her pigtails and summer dress.

"Yes she's fine baby. Want to go see Grandma Elena?" he asks her and she beams up at him.

Grandma? Now I'm lost. So is her mother related to the owner of the store? Man this really is a small town.

Another SUV pulls up behind Heather and Nate's moms and a woman comes running up to Heather. When I look down at her I have to take a double take. Could it be? No, she lives in California. Then again, the last time I talked to her she said she was moving out of that state and away from him. I haven't spoken to her in over three years.

She looks over Heather carefully and asks her about her bandages. Heather smiles and points towards me, explaining that I took care of her. When this woman looks up at me and our eyes meet, I know for sure it's her. Her eyes widen just as Nate walks up and puts his arm around her.

"Carter? Carter Allen?" she nearly shouts and smiles up at me. Nate looks down at her confused and back up at me. Heather and her mom both look at her curiously. I smile widely down at the woman I thought I'd never see again in my life.

The woman standing in front of me is one of my closest and honestly my only best friend during my later college years and even after I graduated. The amazing woman in front of me, is none other than Rebekah Miller.
