CHICA
mami
can I talk to you?

MAMI
of course

(theofila was a busy woman but never to her own daughter, specially when even through words the distress was seeable.)

CHICA
is it okay if I call?

MAMI
do you need me to
kick dad out of the room?

CHICA
not really

(her younger mind reeled from the previous call. she wasn't blind, Tom was very handsome. he was also a lot of positive characteristics she could list for a while but her heart had been closed off for so long, it had become unused to such feelings.)

"hey."

"hello, hija." the couple answered.

(the whole family had grown used to English, only speaking their native tongue in family reunions and such. but parents were able to recognize distress in whatever idiom was being spoken)

"chiquitita, tell me the truth." for Christopher Carson to be quoting Abba, things must be dire.

"I tried to journal it out but it didn't make much sense, I doubt saying anything out loud is going to change it."

"you are free to do as you wish, even if that is being silent. we are here either way."

(unlike most families, the couple understood their daughter was a person able to make decisions and they always trusted her to come to them if needed. their shared trust was something envied by most.)

"it's just, it's been a couple of days since I got back and so much has changed. like, my life turned around a few times but so many of my constants seem to be disappearing that it makes me anxious."

(there seemed to be a lot more to be said but they didn't press, it was a natural law that children didn't disclose everything to their parents. certain things are better when shared with friends or a trusted person.)

"do you need some time off? we can arrange for that small apartment in Amsterdam you love so much."

"the last person to go there with me were Daniel and Amélia, and I'd rather not think about either at the moment."

"what happened? with Amélia because Daniel can, how do the kids say? choke?"

(man and woman smiled in a minimalist office as their daughter's laughter echoed.)

"nothing, I just have this feeling things are about to change a lot and I don't like it. I'll handle it though."

"just remember to call Doc whenever you need to and focusing on work usually seems to help you, so do that."

"will do, papa. work is going to be a great distraction between the new assistant and finishing the loose end for the documentary."

"we love you, and we are very proud of you."

(i might write a short story based on musical songs on Aaron Tveit bc I finally watched Les Mis and have #feels)
