Hanks pov
I have felt this helpless only once before in my life. It's as though the powers the Earth are against me... it feels as though my whole world is bending and caving in around me, threatening to crush me with the weight of it.
I can't believe I ever let it get this far. I never should have been such an idiot. I should have taken him home with me long before we got this deep into the case.
"Any news?" I asked, pacing the granite police station floor.
"Nothing since 30 seconds ago. -The last time you asked." Officer Smith replied.
I breathed heavily. "What can we do? What can I do?-You've got to let me find him!"
"Hey." Smith said firmly, now stepping in front of me, placing her hands on my shoulders. "We are doing all we can. Almost every officer is canvasing for him. Alright? --You're in no state to help- it's better for you to just stay here and wait, this way you'll be the first to know when we find him."
She stared at my face for a moment before sliding her hands off my shoulders. With a few steps she returned to behind her desk.
"No, I can't just fucking sit here!!!" I shook my head and spun on my heel, sprinting for the exit.
"Lieutenant!!" She yelled behind me, standing to follow; she hurried behind me. "Lieutenant wait!! At least--"
"I am not gonna stand around while he is out there alone!!" I snapped turning my head back to her as I marched toward the police station doors.
"I know!" She responded back with a yell. "Just let me go with you at least!"
The latter half of the sentace caught me off guard and I paused with one hand on the glass exit door. "You're not gonna stop me?" I clarified, looking back.
"No." She replied, walking hurriedly toward me, "Now let's get a car and go!" With that she pushed through the door and a cold gust of wind held it open for me to follow behind her, which I did.
We stepped into the cold, wet street side of the police station. Smith unlocked a car parked on the street and we both got in, I was on the passenger side. She pulled out a old paper map from the center glove compartment and unfolded it on the dash. "Okay." She mumbled, looking over the paper like it was going to whisper a secret to her ear. "Connor was taken from here." She explained unnecessary as she pointed to the divsion of streets where the first 900 had died in.
"Yes." I gruffly replied, waiting for her to finish her thought.
"We know the stolen car left this way and pinged a security camera here." She traced her her finger down an imaginary line across the page." She said. "So are best guess is that she fled to the east side of town."
"No, completely ignore the security cam, she is smarter than that. It's a red herring."
She raised her eyes to look at me with an inquisitive glare. "What makes you so sure?"
"I've been chasing this killer since day one. Just trust me." I assured.
"Then what? We should be looking west?" She remarked, throwing her hand out from the map with a huff.
I scratched my chin in thought. "Maybe not that either." I ran through the facts in my head.
Officer Smith groaned in frustration, resting her head against the top of the steering wheel, letting it drop against the leather with a small thud.
"I know she is smart, but she's at the end of her rope-- she's probably getting clumsy." I looked down upon the map, scanning the small lines of streets and railroads of the city, reading them as if they were an alien language, "She is gonna need a place to rework her plan.-- probably an abandoned warehouse or trailer yard, or something." Smith nodded, diligently listening to my words. "She can't have gone far in a stolen vehicle.-- What about South?" I interupted my own sentace.
"South?" Smith questioned.
"Well, you can't go more than 6 blocks North before you hit the river. 900's not one to run from a fight, so I doubt she'd try to get to Canada just yet.-- East is where she wants us to look, and west is to obvious of a misdirection."
"Wow.." Smith mumbled, "This is why I'm not a detective."
"She wouldn't make it more than 10 miles with that stollen car. So how many of these buildings are abandoned?" I traced an circle around a section of the map."
"Ummm..." Smith pulled out her phone and fumbled with it for a moment. "There are 4 abandoned warehouses in those city blocks."
"Alright!" I waved my hands, "Now drive!-- I'll send officers to the locations!" I ordered, snatching the phone from her hand.
She threw the car in gear and switched on the syren and lights. We whirled down the streets.
The first two buildings were empty. When we rolled up to the 3rd building, 2 cop cars waited outside, yet no one had entered the warehouse.
I got out of the car, almost before it stopped moving. "What's the problem?" I yelled approaching another officer, "Why are we not entering the building?"
"We just reported of shots fired. We are waiting for back up."
"For back up!" I shouted in disgust, "There are already two cars here!"
"This isn't a normal criminal-- We have the building surrounded. From here on, it will be treated as a hostage negotiation."
"Negotiation my ass!!" I pulled out my gun and sprinted toward the small steel door entrance, "I'm going in!"
"Anderson!" The officer shouted stepping to stop me.
But then everyone froze cold. As the door shifted slightly, opening from the inside.
I stopped breath heavy, and pointed my revolver. Within a moment every officer had there gun pointed at the door.
"HANDS UP!" I ordered. "WE HAVE THE BUILDING SURROUNDED!!"
The door was only ajar an inch, and it shifted slightly. I could not see behind it. The air hung still in the tensity of the moment. I watched as it creeked open slowly.
"DON'T SHOOT!!" I hear a familiar voice, and Connor limped though the doorway, handless wrists in the air. I ran to him without hesitation.
"CONNOR!!" I shouted, meeting him as he stumbled to me. "Are you okay??!"
He wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight, "I want to go home." was all that he mumbled into my shirt.
