The Love of Dunya is the Root of all Evil*

بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم

وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ
Wamal hayatid dunya illa mata al ghuruor

قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم
حُبُّ الدُّنْيَا رَأْسُ كُلِّ خَطِيْئَةِِ
أَوْ كَمَا قَالَ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَ السَّلَامُ
Qala Rasulullahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
Hubbudnya Ra’su kulli khati atin 
Aw kama qala alahissalaatus salaam

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has brought us into this world for a specific Maqsad. Every second of our lives is to be used to fulfil that Maqsad, objective which Allah has brought us here for. However, to achieve this objective, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has created certain obstacles in the path of our efforts. We will have to go through these obstacles and conquer them if we want to reach the Maqsad and that is Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.  
The reason Allah has done this through his infinite and eternal wisdom, Hikmat is so that we can be tested in this world. The Imtihaan is there for us to make the effort. When there is no effort, obstacles, Imtihaan, test and opposition, then this would have defeated the purpose Allah brought us into this world.

Allah could have very easily put all of us into Jannat, but Allah did not do that. Allah brought us here so that we could be tested. A test is only going to be found when there is opposition which a person has to conquer, an enemy we have to combat.

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala kept for us in this world, in our life, generally three major enemies besides others.
1.   Nafs inside every person
2.   Shaytan
3.   Dunya
These are the three major enemies of a Muslim as he goes through life.
Today we want to discuss the enemy of Dunya.

Hadhrat Maulana Hakim Akhtar Saab Rahimahullah says;
Dunya is anything which makes us unmindful of Allah.
According to this, some things will be considered Dunya and some things will not be considered Dunya. 

For example, wealth. Instead of making us unmindful of Allah, it is taking us closer to Allah by spending it in the right places, then that wealth is not Dunya.

If our Salaah in the Musjid while performing we have Riyaa in that Salaah, then that Salaah is considered part of Dunya because it is making us unmindful of Allah. It is taking us further away from Allah by having Riyaa. There is no Ikhlaas.

Anything we speak regarding Dunya, whatever we say regarding Dunya is according to this definition of Dunya.

The wealth on its own is not evil.
The saying; Money is the root of all evil, is wrong.

Money cannot be the root of all evil. Generally speaking, those who have a lot of money, because they do not clean themselves from the love of money, most of the times, this money becomes the cause of evil. The actual cause is not the money, but the love for money. This is the sickness of Hubbe Dunya, love for Dunya and Hubbe Maal, love for wealth. This sickness is very severe.   

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said in the Hadith;

حُبُّ الدُّنْيَا رَأْسُ كُلِّ خَطِيْئَةِِ
The love of this Dunya, world is the root of every type of mistake, sin and evil.

Therefore, money is not the root of all evil, but the love for Dunya and money is the root of all evil.

Our Ulamaa have explained to us. Normally we categorize the spiritual sicknesses of people into two broad categories.
1.   Hubbe Jaah; love for position and greatness.
2.    Hubbe Baah; love to fulfil the desires of the Nafs, Shahwat.

These are the two main roots of all the spiritual sicknesses found in a person. Any spiritual sickness which a person has, any sin which a person is committing, whatever wrong a person is doing, will be from one of these two categories.

However, these two roots by themselves have another root which is the main root and that is the love of Dunya, Hubbe Dunya.
Hubbe Dunya is the base root. From this sprout Hubbe Jaah and Hubbe Baah. From these, all other different spiritual sicknesses and sins arise.

When you uproot the tree, will the leaves, fruits and branches remain?
Nothing will remain.
Similarly, if we are going to work on Hubbe Dunya and try to remove Hubbe Dunya from our hearts, then all other sicknesses and sins will go with it. Pride, Hasad, Gheebat, anger and every other type of sickness will go with it. Tv, music, looking at girls will also go with Hubbe Dunya which also sprout from Hubbe Dunya.
