بسم الله الرحمان الرحيمMulhikaat means those things which will destroy a person, shatter the life of a person in Dunya and Aakhirat. Mulhikaat means destroyers. Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam mentions three things which will destroy a person completely. These are three desires of the Nafs, three spiritual sicknesses.
The first is;
Ammal mulhikaat hawwan muttaba’unHawaa means every Haraam desire of the Nafs. If these desires of the Nafs are followed, they are going to destroy a person in Dunya as well as Aakhirat. They will finish up a person’s life.
This is general.
Then Nabi e Kareem mentions a specific sickness and desire of the Nafs;Wa shuh’hun mutaa’un
That greed and miserliness which is made Amal upon.
Shuh refers to extreme greed which is combined with extreme miserliness.
Mutaa’un is a sickness which a person is obedient towards. A person and acts accordingly. From this, we get to know, for a person to have Nafsani desires is not wrong. To have Shuh in the heart, the Maadda, root, is not wrong because Allah Himself has created in us. This is part of Insaaniyat, human to have desires.
If a person says; I don’t have the desire to look at a girl, commit Zina, drink alcohol or watch pornography, then he is lying. The desires are there in every person. Allah has put them there. The desires, Hawaa being there are not bad, but they become bad when they are followed.When a person acts upon the desire, he lets the desire overpower him and makes Amal according to the desire, then it is a spiritual disease.
Shuh’hun mutaa’un
The root of greed and miserliness is present in everyone. It becomes bad when Mutaa’un, it is obeyed, a person lets it overpower him. His Amal becomes according to his desire. Practically he obeys the desire of greed and miserliness.
This is the second destroyer, spiritual disease.The third one;
Wa e’jaabul mar’i binafsihi
For a person to like himself. For a person to think he is good. This sickness is called Ujb.
Looking down upon others is pride. Ujb is the sister of pride. In spiritual sicknesses, we use sisters and not brothers. In Ujb you are doing nothing but thinking good regarding yourself; I am good. To like oneself. To think that which I am doing is fine and there is nothing wrong with it. I am right.
Then Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam says;
wa hiya ashaddu ‘alannaasi
From all these three spiritual sicknesses, the third one is the worst, most severe and destructive.Page 4
