بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم

Allah has repeated so many this Ayat of the Quraane Kareem;

وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ
You will remember the words of this Ayat because of being repeated in the Quraan.

The life of this Dunya is nothing but goods, things of deception.

Everything around us is a deception. This entire Dunya is a deception for us. It is this deception, Hubbe Dunya which is the main quality of Dajjal himself.
The word, dajjal, comes from the word, *Dajil* , someone who is a very deceitful person, liar, fraud. Dajjal is the grandmaster of deception.

Allah is saying Dunya is deception. Therefore, dajjal and Dunya have a big connection because they are both deceptions.
The main weapon dajjal uses to mislead people is Hubbe Dunya. Right now, the entire world is blanketed in this deception. Everything we see around us is a deception. Dunya is like a stage and a play is being played out on the stage. Nothing is real.

Allah is saying;

وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ
From the outside, things may seem to be something, but the reality is otherwise. The reality is completely different which is hidden from our eyes. An outer covering has been put to deceive us.
Dunya is nothing but deception.

Allah is terming Dunya to be Mataa which is translated as goods, things of deception. In Arabic, Mataa refers to things from which you take benefit and then throw them away. What is the actual dictionary and deep meaning of this word so as to help us understand the reality of Dunya?

Mufassireen have given two different meanings of the word, Mataa and its origin.
One meaning the way the Arabs used to use it.
There was a great Imam of Nahwa, Arabic grammar, He was looking for the actual word for the meaning of Mataa and where it originated from. In those days for each word, they would travel very long distances just to find out its meaning.

He ended up somewhere in the rural areas of the Arabian Peninsula, perhaps Yemen. It was a mountainous area. He was very tired. There was a house and he sat down there to rest. He asked a boy there, the whereabouts of his parents.
The boy replied they are not there.

*The Love of Dunya is the Root of all Evil*

بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم

The Imam was actually looking for three words including Mataa which are all in the Quraane Kareem. The second word was Raqeeb, which is in Surah Kahf and the third was Ta’ala.

As he was waiting, he saw a black dog coming. There was an open kitchen area with a stove inside. There was very dirty black cloth like the one we use to wipe spills in the kitchen which is very dirty, black and stinking. The dog picked that cloth with its mouth and started running up a mountain. The boy tried to catch the dog but he could not.

A little while after the boy’s mother came. The boy described the incident which had happened to his mother in one sentence.
The Imam said; in that one sentence, Allah granted me all the three words.

جَاءَ الرَّقِيْمُ أَخَذَ الْمَتَاعَ وَ تَعَالَ إِلَى الْجَبَلِ
Jaa’ar raqeem akhadhal mataa wa ta’ala ilal jabal

Once I got to know about these three words, I packed my bags and left.
This is how Allah gives to those people who search for Ilm. They had to go into the rural areas where the Arabs spoke the Khaalis Arabic.

Jaa’ar raqeem
جَاءَ الرَّقِيْمُ
the black dog came; Raqeem is a black dog
akhadhal mataa
  أَخَذَ الْمَتَاعَ
he called the cloth, Mataa
Wa ta’ala ilal jabal
  وَ تَعَالَ إِلَى الْجَبَلِ
he climbed on top of the mountain.

Our Maqsad here is the word, Mataa. What does Mataa mean? It refers to that dirty cloth we have in the kitchen.
Allah is referring to Dunya as that Mataa. This is the value of Dunya in the eyes of Allah.
مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ
Mataa ul ghuroor.

There is also another definition our Ulamaa of Mufassireen have given.
Mataa is that cloth which a woman uses to clean her menstrual blood.
What is the state of that cloth?
Menstrual blood is not like normal blood.

This is how Allah is describing Dunya as. This is how worthless Dunya is.

Are you even going to hold these two cloths? Are you going to wipe your face with it? If you have water on your face, will you use those clothes to wipe your face? Will you keep those clothes close by you when sleeping at night?
Allah is saying this is the reality of Dunya.

The worthless Dunya in the Eyes of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala mentioned by Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam in a Hadith;

لَوْ كَانَتِ الدُّنْيَا تَعْدِلُ عِنْدَ اللهِ جَنَاحَ بَعُوْضَةٍ مَا سَقَى كَافِرًا مِنْها شَرْبَةَ مَاءٍ
Law kaanatid dunya ta’dilu ‘indallaahi janaaha b’udatin maa saqan kaafiran minha sharbata maain

Had Dunya been worth in the Eyes of Allah, the wing of a mosquito then Allah would not have given a Kaafir a drink of water also from Dunya.

That is why the Kuffaar are getting not only water but many other things besides water.
We think that the person whom Allah gives Dunya is a successful person. Halake Allah is giving Dunya to His Friends as well as His enemies. You will never give your enemies the thing which is beloved to you.
Generally, we see the Kuffaar are wealthier than the Muslims. They are in more Aysh and Araam than the Muslims. But what is the use when this is not the certificate of the happiness of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala?

Allah gives wealth to the Kuffaar and Fussaaq to put them into Fitnah. To take them further away from Him. This is the effect of Dunya.

Allah is saying; had the value of Dunya been equal to the wing of a mosquito, then the Kuffaar would have gotten even a drink of water. It would have been too valuable.

If the value of Dunya had been equal to the wing of a mosquito then it would have become too valuable to give the Kuffaar water to drink.
Therefore, the entire Dunya is less in value than the wing of a mosquito.
How much is the wing of a mosquito?
Many times, you cannot see the wing of a mosquito, it is so small.

Another Hadith comes to mind. Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam has said;

الدُّنْيَا مَلْعُوْنَةٌ وَ مَلْعُوْنٌ مَا فِيْهَا إِلَّا ذِكْرُ اللهِ وَ مَا وَالَاهُ وَ عَالِمٌ أَوْ مُتَعَلِّمٌ
Ad dunya mal’oonatu mal’oonun maa feeha illa dhikrullah wama waalaahu wa aalimun wa muta’allimun

This Dunya is cursed. Everything which is in Dunya is cursed, except for the Dhikr of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and anything which is connected to the Dhikr of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and the person who is an Aalim and a Muta’aallim, one studying the Ilm of Deen.

The Laanat of Allah is continuously coming down onto this Dunya.
Dhikr means the complete Dhikr which is Deen.

From this, we get to know the Fazeelat of the people of Ilm, whether the person is an Aalim or a Muta’allim, the student of Deen who is becoming an Aalim. Such a great Fazeelat which you will not find anywhere else. The person is saved from the curses of Allah which are coming down on everything else and everyone else. But such a person who is studying the Ilm of Deen, he is becoming an Aalim is saved from the curses of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.
Cursed means to be far away from the Mercy of Allah. The Mercy of Allah is not coming down upon the Dunya and the things of this Dunya.
