african american. american descendant of slavery. black american. afro-american. american. All these names of identifying as a black person in America. It's a race. It's a part of a culture.
As I got to speak with people from across the world, African-American is not a thing outside of the U.S. I'm an American to Koreans. I'm an American to Africans. I'm an American to other Americans. I don't see no difference between us all. Now when I say black American, I identify with other black people in America. When I say black, I identify with all black people in the world.
This is just my thought and idea behind it.
I don't like to say African-American because my ancestors aren't African. They're American, indigenous, and biracial. My timeline doesn't stretch that far for them to be from Africa. But maybe their ancestors are.
Many black Africans find it disrespectful when we say African-American so I just say black American. I think I like the term afro-American, though.
How do you or would you identify? If you are other race/ethnicity, what are your peeves?
