Plans Change || Sixteen

Cariah's POV:

We watched movies all day and just hung out at the house. I wasn't going home tonight again because Colby and I had made arrangements with my grandma to meet up with her tomorrow in Sanger. Which I had learned is 4 hours away.

"Are you excited?" He asked as he sat on his bed next to where I was laying.

"Kinda. Also just kinda nervous"

"Nervous about What?" He asked.

"What if I find more than I was looking for?"

"Cariah Your mom was an amazing woman. So you're not going to find anything crazy about her or her family" he said.

"Okay. I should probably call my sister tho. I'm sure she's going crazy since she hasn't heard from me" I said as I got up. I grabbed my phone and went down stairs.

I sat on the couch and called ZJ's number.

"Oh my god where have you been?" She said right away.

"Hey ZJ. How's it going?" I asked.

"Horrible. Dad has been worried. I should probably tell him you're on the phone" she said.

"No ZJ. Please don't. He knows where I'm at" I said.

"Well where are you? Are you with Colby? And dad told me he didn't know where you were" she said.

"ZJ there's just a lot that's been going on recently and I just can't go home right now"

"Cariah what's going on?" She asked.

"I think it's just better if you don't know" I said.

"Cariah we tell each other everything. What could be so bad that you can't tell me? Oh my god are you pregnant by Colby? Does dad know?"

"No ZJ I'm not pregnant. But stuff has just happened that if you did know you'd look at that person differently"

"I'm so confused"

"Look I gotta go okay. I love you and I'll see you soon. Just don't tell dad you talked to me" I said before hanging up. I put my face in my hands and sighed.

"Are you okay?" I heard. I looked up and saw Colby.

"Yeah. I just hate that I have to leave my sister with my dad. Knowing all the things he's lied about I wouldn't doubt it if he'd continue lying to her"  I explained.

"Well what if she goes to live with her mom?" He asked.

"Her mom would never win in court. Even though her mom is way more responsible and capable of raising a child, my dad makes a lot of money and the court has always used that against her" I said.

"Yeah but isn't she 16?"

"Yeah"

"Then she legally should be allowed to choose which parent to live with" Colby said.

"It's not that easy. My dad and her mom have been to court countless times over custody. It's just always been in his favor" I explained.

"Yeah that's tough"

"We should probably go to sleep though. We have a long drive to Sanger tomorrow" I said.

"That is true" he said. We went to sleep and woke up the next morning at about 6am. We were supposed to meet my grandma at her house by noon.

"So are you ready?" Colby asked me.

"Ready as I'll ever be" I said. We went outside and put our stuff in the car. Then we started the long drive to Sanger. It was very interesting to see a different part of California. We've traveled around a bit but never to like smaller cities. It's always been big cities.

After the long drive we finally made it to Sanger.

"Welcome to my hometown" Colby said.

"Wow it's.... well it just looks like a normal city" I said.

"Yeah there's nothing really too special about it" he said.

"I mean It's nice" I said.

"Well I haven't been here in a few years so some things look a lot different. And it's definitely way different than from when I was in high school" he explained.

"Don't Your parents live here?"

"Yeah but they always come visit me. I hardly come over here. There's just more to do in LA than here so they'd rather come to me" he explained.

"So what is there to do here?" I asked.

"Nothing really. I mean theirs a huge Walmart, a few pizza places, and a couple parks. But that's about it" he said.

"Wow"

"This is where we all went to school" he said as he pointed at the high school we were passing by.

"Wow. For this being a small town that's a pretty big high school" I said.

"Yeah it is pretty big. People from the smaller surrounding cities were always trying to come to school here. I don't know why but they were"

"So where are we staying at?" I asked him.

"Well I was thinking my parents house. If you're fine with that. Unless you'd rather stay in a hotel" he said.

"We can stay at your parents house. It's fine" I said.

"Good because I already called them and they're expecting us" he said.

"Oh Colby Brock. What am I going to do with you" I said with a laugh.

"I can think of a few things"

"Minor" I said pointing to myself.

"Riiight" he said.
