Plans Change || Twenty

Cariah's POV:

I woke up the next morning and saw that my dad had texted me.

From Dad: where are you?

You've missed 3 days of school in a row

You're such a disgrace to this family

I sighed before putting my phone down. Colby was asleep next to me but must have woken up because he started moving.

"What time is it?" He asked with a yawn.

"8am" I said. He put his head on my shoulder and closed his eyes.

"Do you think I'm being a disgrace to my family?" I asked him.

"No. Why?" He said.

"My dad texted me last night asking where I was and that I'm a disgrace to our family" I said.

"Cariah you're not a disgrace. If anything your dad is a disgrace" he said.

"Yeah I guess. I just don't understand why he's so mad about me talking to you. Even if we were just friends nothing more, what's the big deal? I want to know things about my mom and obviously you'd know more over my dad who won't tell me shit" I said.

"I don't know. Maybe he's actually lied to you about so much and he doesn't want you to know anything. I mean they did have a lot of problems when she was here" he explained.

"I just don't know what to do. I have like a month left of school and if I keep missing I won't graduate and get to go to college" I said.

"Then you can stay at my house for as long as you need. I'll even drive you to and from school everyday if I have to" he said as he sat up and looked at me.

"That's a hassle Colby I live 45 minutes from your house"

"I don't care. I will do whatever I can to make sure you don't have to go back to a house where you feel unwanted or unloved" he said.

"You'd really do that?" I asked.

"Yeah I would. Whatever I can do and whatever you need me to I'll do it" he said causing me to smile.

"Nobody had ever said that to me" I said.

A few hours later we met with my grandma again at her house. Riley was there and Colby is still convinced that Riley is my mom. I think he's crazy but he's trying to get to the bottom of it.

"Let me show you her old room" my grandma said.

"Sounds good" I said as I got up and followed her leaving Colby and Riley in the living room.

Colby's POV:

"It's crazy how similar you and Jade look. You guys could pass as twins" I said to Riley.

"Yeah. Well me and all my cousin all look similar so I guess it's just in the genetics"

"Yeah but I've met all of Jade's cousins on both her parents side and none of you guys look that similar. But you and Jade do. Did you guys talk often?" I asked.

"No. We hardly talked actually. I didn't even know she had a daughter till recently. Didn't even know who the dad was or anything"

"Oh you never knew?" I asked.

"Nope. Not till a few months ago. And they never told me who the dad was but I mean I'm not even from here so it doesn't matter anyway" she said.

"I should actually go check on Cariah. This whole thing is a lot to take in for her." I said as I got up. But once I got up a little pug ran up to me and started wagging its tail.

"Oh hi little guy. You're so cute. You know his attitude reminds me of my dog Roxy I used to have back when I was in high school. She used to run up to everyone all excited" I said before standing up and started to walk again.

"Well Roxy sounds like the cutest German Shepard" Riley said but I stopped and turned around.

"What" she asked.

"How did you know Roxy was a German Shepard." I said.

"What?"

Gotcha.

"I just said her name. I never said what breed she was" I said.

"Oh it was just a guess. You seem like a German Shepard type of person" she said suspiciously. Something is definitely up.

"Oh. Okay then. But yeah I should get Cariah. Her dad is probably looking for her"

"Oh yeah how's Jackson doing?" She asked.

"Aha. You said you didn't know who her dad was"

"Oh Umm yeah I've heard my aunt say his name before but I've never met him or anything" she said trying to save yourself.

"Save it. What's going on? Who are you really?" She sighed before standing up.

"Hey Colby. It's been awhile since we've seen each other" she said.

"Jade?" She nodded.

"What? How? Why? What?" I said but Cariah and Jade's mom came back.

"Colby are you ready?" She asked she was holding a small box.

"Yeah sure. Whatcha got there?" I asked.

"Just some pictures of my mom. She said I could take them and bring them back whenever"

"Ok cool" I said fidgeting around.

"Are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost" Cariah said. I looked back at Jade.

"I think I might have" I said. Riley laughed.

"He's funny" she said.
