"Hey, Wood," I whispered behind him.
He looked up before he realized where my voice came from and turned. He looked at me blankly, having never seen me before.
"You dropped this," I murmured, handing him Quidditch through the Ages.
"Wasn't me, I have this entire book memor-"
"Ninety-seven," I whispered and turned away.
I walked to my table and sat silently, a new textbook in hand. I watched as he opened it up to Chapter 10. He pulled out the parchment pieces and looked them over quickly, cautiously shuffling them. I could see his eyes light up across the room and looked down at my book. I could feel his eyes studying me.
When I returned to my dorm, I found a note on my pillow.
"I owe you one - Oliver Wood"
It was clearly hand-delivered by one of my mates, as it was perfectly placed and obviously opened and refolded.
"So what'd you do for Wood?" Amelia asked.
"You know how Flint was sitting next to me in the library and being extremely annoying?" I asked.
"Yeah?"
"He may have lost his Quidditch strategies," I said quietly even though the dorm was empty. But we were Slytherins; someone was listening.
"You..." She was shocked.
"I have too many classes with Wood for him to be angry at all of us," I said with a shrug.
"And Flint's little crush will keep him from acting out around you, won't it?" she asked with a disapproving look although a smile threatened to break.
I nodded and crawled into bed.
The next morning, I had DADA with the Gryffindors. Wood sat his stuff beside me, earning a glare from Amelia.
"Are those genuine?" he asked lowly.
"His chicken scratch, wasn't it?" I replied just as quiet.
"How do I know he didn't have you pass me fake ones?" he asked, turning the page quietly.
"Why would I do him any favors?"
"Why would you go against your house to give me one?"
"Somebody was annoying while I was trying to study," I muttered.
"Alright then. Crackin' job, lass," he whispered closer to my ear.
A chill went down my spine at his accent and warm breath.
"Any time, Wood."
Finally, it was time for the match. Wood had clearly taken full advantage of everything I gave him.
As I walked back up to the school, a glove grabbed my shoulder. I thought it was Flint at first and whirled around, hand on my wand. But it was Wood.
"Ye alright there, lass?" he asked, accent a little thicker than that day in DADA.
"I thought you were somebody else," I dismissed. "Nice match. You've got plenty of talent on your team, even without yourself."
"Thanks. We work solid," he replied with a prideful smile.
"It shows, really," I complimented, stepping closer to him as the throng heading towards the castle thickened behind me.
"But did ya do all that figurin' yourself? With all the things wrong in it 'n all?" he asked, his accent thickening more and more.
