I sat with Draco on the lush green grass with my Charms essay in front of me. We discussed, found references, researched, and reviewed together. Every so often, we took short breaks to talk about something that had happened in class. Everything was sunshine and rainbows.

But in fourth year, the storm clouds rolled in.

As the ball approached, I started getting nervous. Draco and I were best friends, of course, but would we go to the ball together? As friends or as a couple?

"Hey you," Zabini greeted as I walked into the common room.

"Hey yourself," I replied and sat on the couch between him and Draco.

"Do you've got a date to the ball yet?" I shook my head no. "You do now," he decided and put his arms around my shoulders.

"Deal," I decided and put my hand on his knee.

He put his arm around my shoulders and a hand on my thigh. His fingers ran from my thigh to my knee slowly. I leaned into him and squeezed his knee.

Draco rose and left. I called goodnight to him. He murmured goodnight as he climbed upstairs. I leaned into Blaise and closed my eyes.

"You look like an angel," he whispered.

"It's not hard when I'm content and comfortable," I whispered back.

At the Yule Ball, Blaise and I danced for a while and ended up in the mosh pit, but we eventually made our way off the dance floor. We sat at the closest empty table.

"Tonight's been fun."

Blaise nodded. "It's worth Malfoy being mad at me."

"What?" I asked, very confused.

"He was planning on going with you," Blaise explained with a shrug.

"Then maybe he should've told me that. Or asked to go as dates."

"Tell him that," Blaise chuckled.

"If he would have brought it up, I would have. And I still will. Although...I doubt it really matters now."

He raised an eyebrow. I only gestured to the corner across the hall from us where the two were macking each other. "Guess he's not too upset. Kinda surprising."

"You know how things are," I sighed, referring to the issue everyone seemed very aware of, at least on the surface.

"You need a distraction," he decided.

"One that doesn't involve moving much," I agreed. I looked around and saw dumb and dumber were the only other two not doing anything. "We're crossing enemy lines," I joked and rose.  He took my hand, and I led him to the two sad boys. "Hey sorry-looking lumps of fuck. We're joining you. Also, play cards with us."

The two looked to each other, confused. Then they simply shrugged and sat up to the table. I thanked Merlin for enlarged pockets as I pulled out a deck of cards.

It was silent for a full round until Harry was brave enough to speak. "Why aren't you with Malfoy?"

"Blaise asked me first," I answered simply.

"Isn't he...I dunno...jealous?" Ron asked slowly.

I laughed slightly. "Blaise thought the same. But look at him and Pansy. They're having a better time than we would have."

"But... Why? You seem nicer than Parkinson," Harry asked.

"Well..."

"And you're prettier than her," Ron interjected.
