Chapter 27th – Birthday Girl

I don’t know what exactly woke me up. It might have been the sun in my face, the soft humming of the birds or the stiff laughter beneath me. Whatever it was, it allowed me to open my eyes mere seconds before being rolled out of bed…

…Into the cold water.

“What the fuck?!” I emerged spitting the water that had invaded my mouth.

“Happy Birthday!” Every single one of my cousins stood on the lakeshore grinning from ear to ear.

“I hate you” I submerged again properly waking up now and pulling the wet hair from my face. I accepted Teddy’s and Fred’s outstretched hand and they pulled me from the Loch. I noticed my mattress was by their feet and remembered how the laughter had come from beneath me, they had probably carried me – with my mattress – to the Loch and… you know the rest. “Funny, you are, good prank, you can leave me alone for the rest of the day.” I shrugged on the overly large t-shirt I’ve been offered. It clung to my wet body and the soaked pajamas short and shirt I was wearing.

“You wish Rosie, it have just started” James pulled his arm around my shoulders, not really caring about my current state.

“But-“

“You’re turning 17 ‘cus, it’s a specialday” Fred slid his arm on the other side of me. No use arguing.

We laughed all the way back, once there each went back to their respective ‘houses’ and Hugo and I were greeted with the heavenly scent of pancakes.

“We’re back!” Hugo announced and Dad appeared from the kitchen.

“Happy birthday princess!” He went for a hug but changed his mind in the last second. “On a second thought, I’ll give your hug after a well-deserved shower right Rosi- Hey! Is that my Wizard’s Chess Champion shirt?” Hugo laughed awkwardly and darted upstairs. Dad looked at me.

“Hey! Don’t blame the birthday girl!” I followed my brother’s cue and got in my cozy little room. I pulled out my clothes and took a quick shower. After I was properly dry I put on a pair of denim shorts and a tank top. I secured my wet curls in a messy bun on top of my head and ran downstairs finally getting my birthday pancakes.

“Happy birthday sweetie” Mum kissed my cheek before sitting in front of me. “What do you think of having a family games day? There will be a barbecue for lunch and I was thinking that we could go to the lake and have all those little competitions you love. We can play quidditch, and by we I mean you, and have loads of fun. At night there will be the birthday supper and present exchange. Did you like it?”

“Wow, you have really planned it all!”

“If you don’t like it Rose we can do-“

“No no, I love it, really”

“Go put on some bikinis then!” She smiled and took my empty plate, on the way she kissed the top of my head again and I went back to my room to change. Again.
