Javi and I met each other at the hallway as I was about to return to my room. Thought my night was just gonna be same, old, and boring compared to yesterday's, but it got me excited when he invited me to his and Juan's room for game night. They were playing Mario Kart.
As we approached their room, he broke the comfortable silence.
"Hey, tell me nga. And be honest." Javi took a pause before asking. "Nililigawan ka na ba ni Juan?"
"Hindi, hindi. We're just very close." In my defense, I was actually telling the truth. Not sure if Javi was satisfied with that but I think he also didn't want to pressure me.
"Very, very?" He just asked jokingly and I responded funnily. "Oo, super, very, very."
We were just a few rooms away when we saw 2 figures standing on their door. The guy was definitely Juan. But the girl, she seems oddly familiar but I just can't seem to recall.
Then, it struck me. That's the girl Juan went with in high school. It's Dani Ravena,
his ex.
I remember the time when he went as her date at the girl's graduation ball. The memory was clear as day. I remember it all so well because he was supposed to be my date then. But he cancelled it all for her and I was stuck with Javi. Not that I'm still complaining or sulky about it. It just reminded me again of how important that girl was to him.
Noon. Eh ngayon kaya?
"Is that Dani?" My voice kind of cracked at the end. It's as if the girl was a monster from the past that scared the crap out of me.
"I-I think so..." Javi didn't want to believe it also. But what really surprised us was when Dani took Juan in tight embrace.
And Juan? He was happy as a puppy. He had this bright smile on him. Genuine. Like the smile I saw the time I woke up in his bedroom. They went dashing away from the room, laughing, with the girl's hand wrapped around his wrist.
"Hey, Pen. Babalik din yun si Juan. Let's just-"
Before Javi could even finish his sentence, I already took a step behind and turned my back away. Bakit ka ganyan, Pen? Wala ka namang karapatan maramdaman yang nararamdaman mo. Sabi mo nga,
you're just very close friends.
