THE CALGARY HERALD
HOUSE HIPPOS ENDANGERED?!
January 16, 2020
The North American House Hippo population rates have been in a state of steady decline since the mid 2000's when homes across Canada and the eastern United States began to take precautions about letting their homes be safe habitats for the creatures. After a PSA by the Canadian government in 1999, people across the country have been of two different stances. Help the hippos or hinder them?

Before 1999, House Hippos could be found in almost any home, with children leaving out snacks for them and old socks lying about. Unfortunately, since the PSA many people have taken a stance against them, wondering if they were just a mass illusion of childhood. Groups have popped up, such as the Stay At Home Moms Against House Hippos (SAHMAHH) and Clean House No Hippos (CHNH). These groups have been pushing for people to make sure their homes are clean, and free of any environments where the 'Imaginary Hippos' could hide. They claim they don't want their children believing in crazy fantasies.

Many others are outraged at the idea of these groups, and have been trying to protect the House Hippos and create at least one part of their homes as a welcoming space. Their main argument is that it would be ridiculous that a whole country imagined House Hippos, and that it is not only children who can see them.

Unfortunately in a world where climate change is debated, so is the existence of the House Hippo. Since the mid 2000's when the anti-hippo movement picked up steam, environmental groups have began tracking house hippo populations and have noticed a steep decline, indicating the species may soon be endangered.

Luckily the numbers in Canadian populations have only dropped by 7% since the studies began, however across the eastern U.S, numbers have dropped by 65% since 2005. Without an increase in welcoming environments, its likely that house hippos will be extinct in the U.S.A by 2030.

One positive thing has come from this however. According to animal protection and adoption surveys, cat and dog adoptions have increased since the debut of the ad. With the larger household pets often warding off the house hippos, adoptions rise each time SAHMAHH appears in the news.
