Sydney's POV
He had the whole thing planned out. The red and white checkered blanket was under their big tree in the backyard. The picnic basket was placed in the very center of the blanket, it was as he'd been planning this for weeks, when he just asked me about it yesterday. I was happy though, it was the last day before school started and I was spending it with one of my closest friends... and his little sister and older brother of course.
We sat down on the blanket, "So your highness, ready for Davidson Day's 8th grade girls to obnoxiously try to befriend you?" He asked, imitating Nash when he said your highness.
"I'm actually happy to get to know some girls from here, all I know are your friends. I don't think it will be too bad."
"The girls at my school tend to not be very friendly to the girls I hang out with, because they think they're all stuck up my butt or something."
"Well, I guess I'll have to show them that I'm not, now won't I?" I said as I threw a grape into my mouth. "I mean it's not like we're dating or anything, so they shouldn't really have a problem with me. You were the first person I met here, so I'm bound to be friends with you."
He turned his head, he looked disappointed. I tried to change the subject quickly.
"So, is it weird that Sky is going to kindergarten this year?"
"Yes! She's growing up way too fast. I'm telling you, when that child gets a boyfriend he's gotta be approved by me, Nash, Will, and Johnnie!!"
We laughed and ate our sandwiches. We mostly talked about school, he told me the people I shouldn't hang out with, and they guys to watch out for.
Nash came out with Keeda, their dog, "Oh don't mind me, just letting Keeda use the bathroom," he winked then whistled a tune.
Hayes looked at me nervously, "So, since we kind of got interrupted by Ben at the banquet, do you want to dance?" He stood up and put out his hand.
"This is random..? But sure."
Nash was walking inside as I saw him kick a CD player. Can I Have This Dance from High School Musical started playing and I giggled. He knows I watch that movie all the time.
"Hayes, I'm a lacrosse player, I can't dance, at all."
"So am I, I guess we can get through this together."
We were both terrible. We laughed about every time someone stepped on the others foot, which was quite frequently. He looked at me like he was worried about something, I just don't know what. I noticed when I made that comment about dating earlier he got really tense. I don't want to hurt him, but I don't know how relationships work.
And with every step together, we just keep on getting better. So can I have this dance?
Hayes looked me in the eyes, he looked like he was about to vomit.
"Hayes, are my terrible turns making you dizzy or what?"
Take my hand, I'll take the lead, and every turn will be safe with me, don't be afraid, afraid to fall, you know I'll catch you through it all.
"Sydney, it's been two months now and you're one of the realest girls I've ever met."
"First thing's first I'm darealyst," I whispered, and he must of heard me because he laughed.
"See, that's one of the things I like about you. You can make a joke out of anything, everything around you is always positive. I also like that you're not afraid to act like a tomboy. I remember one of the first times you came over and beat Nash in arm-wrestling. Also with Skylynn, you don't know how much she looks up to you. When she said you're her favorite princess, she wasn't lying. She talks about you all the time. She says you're best friends and her older sister."
"I do love that kid," I said, I was trying not to blush too hard, but I don't think it was working. "Why are you saying all of this?"
He spun me out because the song was ending then spun me back into a hug. I tried my best not to step on his feet, because he seemed pretty serious.
"Sydney, will you do me the honor, your highness," he said with a smirk, "of being my girlfriend?"
I saw an eye come from the blinds that was so bright blue I knew who it was from the second I saw it. Nash was spying, but that's typical Nash. I laughed and saw Hayes signal behind his back for Nash to leave.
"Yes Hayes."
Nash came running out the back porch, "Congratulations to the new couple!! Come inside and I'll make you all celebratory Ramen Noodles!!"
Hayes sounded annoyed, "Nash, we just ate."
"Hayes, it's okay," I told him and laughed at how excited Nash was.
