Sydney's POV
First day of school as a new kid. I don't know what to think about this. Yeah, I know some people, but they're mostly the guys on Hayes' lacrosse team. I want to hang out with girls too, hopefully I don't get judged for hanging around Hayes like he said people do. Maybe I shouldn't mention we're together. Yeah, keeping it on the down-low for a while sounds okay with me. I'm just not going to mention it, hopefully Hayes doesn't bring it up. I hope he doesn't think I don't want to be together, I just want to try to make friends without being "That Girl Hayes is Dating."
Mom dropped me off to school first because she knew Kacey wasn't going to leave her easily, and I needed to get to class. When I went inside I found my locker, it was on the first floor and my first class of the day was on the second floor.
I saw Keith in the hallway and he came up to me, "Aye Syd! Have a nice first day, don't beat anybody up if they annoy you, you tend to do that," he chuckled.
"I'll try," I joked.
Most of the people here were really welcoming. Coming from a small town in Indiana I'm used to everyone knowing everyone, but I think I was one of many new kids this year. I didn't feel as lonely as I thought I would. A lot of Hayes' lacrosse team came here and they all said hi to me in the hallways. A lot of people in the hallway were stopping me and asking me what my name was and where I came from.
My first class was Social Studies. I hated it, it was my least favorite subject. I wasn't bad at it, I just didn't like doing it. I found an empty seat towards the middle of the classroom, because I hate sitting in the front, and I knew if I sat in the back I'd fall asleep.
The room filled up with students. I liked having a strict dress-code because I wouldn't feel awkward about dressing up or down too much, everybody basically wore the same thing. Our teacher came in, she was short and skinny with short brown hair and blonde highlights. She looked about 40, but she had a young face.
"Hi, I'm Mrs. Harley, and the first thing you need to know about me is that I like food," the class laughed. "No I'm serious, if we do an extra credit assignment any time this year it will involve food. You all just have to help me come up with a way to make it 'educational.'"
I liked her already.
"Okay, so if you don't like where you are sitting now, speak now or forever hold your peace because I'm making our seating chart based on where you are now."
I was content with where I was. To my left was a blonde girl, I think she said her name was Abbie. In front of me was a short boy named Cameron, and to my right was a tall boy with big brown eyes named Logan.
"Hey, I'm Logan, you look confused which means you're probably new. Where are you from?"
"Hi, I'm Sydney. I'm from Indiana. Is it really that obvious?"
He smiled, "Nah, the people that have been here for a while just know each other, and I don't know you so I assumed you were new."
Mrs. Harley continued to write up the seating chart and asked people what their names were. A short blonde girl behind me joked and said, "Logan shut up and turn around." He and I laughed, she said her name was Hannah, both of her parents worked at the school. She told me everyone thinks that she's a goody-goody but she's really not.
Mrs. Harley gave us her plan for the year and just listed some things we were going to go over. She said we could have the rest of the class period to talk, I have a feeling I'm not going to have that much of a problem with history this year.
Hannah and I talked about sports. She played basketball and volleyball, I told her I played lacrosse.
"Oh that's so cool, our friend Hayes plays lacrosse! I think his season just ended though, now he's playing football. Have you met Hayes?"
"Haha yeah, we're neighbors."
Logan joked, "Eh, Hayes is alright, but I'm better."
Hannah glared at him, "Shut up, you don't play football or lacrosse Mr. Basketball Boy."
The bell rang and I got help from Hannah to find my next class, Algebra. My teacher was sitting in his chair doing the duck face, it was pretty awkward. His name was Mr. Smith. A girl named Sara sat next to me, she was really pretty with long dark hair.
"Hi, I'm Sara. You're going to love Mr. Smith, he's crazy. Everybody here likes him. As long as you do your work in his class, it's easy."
"SARA JO WALMART!" I heard him yell.
"Oh, and he has nicknames for everyone," she laughed.
So far Davidson Day is actually more appealing than my old school. I'm just waiting for the periods I have with Hayes, I don't want him to talk about us in front of people. I like making new friends on my own, Hannah and Sara seemed really nice.
Algebra was pretty easy, Mr. Smith just gave us a pre-test to see what we learned from last year. My third period was Art. My teacher in there was a young lady that could have fit in with the students she was so short. She seemed like a very nice lady. I sat next to some obnoxious kid named Andy that didn't shut up about how he should have been quarterback on the football team and he shouldn't have gotten kicked off last year for having 3 F's on his report card. All we had to do in there was make a collage from magazine scraps of things that represent us. Mine had music notes, a camera, and a square of the color red.
Lunch was next. I brought my lunch because I always used to at home. My old school's food was disgusting, so I packed my own. This school had a Chic - Fil - A in the cafeteria, looks like I was wrong about bringing my own food. (Authors Note: That's a real thing, a school near me actually has a Chic - Fil - A in the cafeteria. ) I found an open table and Hannah came and sat next to me.
"Hey, so apparently we have the same lunch. This is where Hayes, Keith, my friend Carley and I sit. Looks like you found the table yourself!"
"Yeah, looks like I did," I said trying to avoid the fact that I just happened to sit at their table.
"So, how are you liking it so far? People here are a little annoying sometimes, but not everyone."
"The only annoying person I've ran into so far is Andy."
"Oh, you've met Andy... I'm sorry."
"Yeah, I sit next to him in art. He wasn't a very, how do I say it, pleasant person?"
"Yeah, that's about how you describe him. Just don't mind him, he's always been like that."
Keith came and sat down, "Hey Syd!"
"Hey."
A girl came walking with him, I'm assuming that was Carley. Then behind them was Hayes.
Please don't bring anything up, please don't bring anything up.
