Alex's P.O.V
The cookout was finally set up. Endless arrays of string lights had been hung up over the patio, the stage for music had been put into place, the tables were polished thanks to me, the juicy smell of salmon and steak filled the air, and all the waiters and waitresses were dressed in their finest.
The crowd started to fill in and I looked for Fiona.
Where even was she?
Fiona's P.O.V
I stood in front of the mirror, hoping I looked alright.I chose a cute lacy white dress with a tan belt and my tan combat boots.
My long mermaid like hair was down, and straightened and I felt satisfied.I turned around and marked another day on the calendar.
Three weeks till I say goodbye to land.
"Fiona! You ready?" My mom called up.
"Yeah!" I called back, practically falling down the stairs with my clumsy human legs.
"Careful honey!" Mom gasped, catching me. I smiled sheepishly.
We hopped into the car and began the short ride to the Lakeside Tavern.
"Fiona, you know we leave in three weeks...." My mom began after a short silence.
"I know," I replied simply.
"I think you should tell that boy Alex how you feel before you leave," she winked at me.
I whipped my head around to face her.
"How did you know about him?!"
I demanded, feeling my face burn."No mermaid would ditch swimming for land... Unless it's something important," she smiled at me.
"Oh... Uh... Yeah... Right..." I stuttered, trying to not make eye contact.
"Fiona just tell him or give signs! One way or another you'll feel better about it," she assured me.
"And if it doesn't...?" I asked.
Mom just stayed silent.
Alex's P.O.V
I got off my waiter duty first.
I still hadn't spotted Fiona and we were already an hour into the cookout...Perhaps she wasn't coming after all.
I sighed.
I would've never dressed up if she wasn't going to come.
It was then when I spotted some red hair.I instantly smiled and I pushed through the crowd, casually walking to the dessert table hoping to catch her eye.
No response.
Hmm...
I tried walking by again, this time to the grill.
Nothing...
I had to take some drastic measures.
I stalked up behind her and picked her up from behind the waist.
"AH!" She squealed, flailing.
I set her down to face me.
"Hi," I smiled.
"Hi," she said breathlessly laughing.
"You look... Nice," I sighed out, my eyes gleaming. She really did look pretty.
"Same to you, diner boy." She beamed up at me.
Both our faces colored slightly."Why are you so late? I've been waiting for you for an hour," I asked her, starting to walk with her alongside the crowd.
"You... Waited for me?" She asked hopefully.
"Well... Yeah! I mean... We are... Friends..." I said awkwardly, mentally slapping myself.
"Oh. Uh yeah," she replied awkwardly as well, her eyes not meeting mine.
Come on, Alex. Don't loose her... Tell her!
I said to myself."Fiona I-" I tried to begin but Fiona then spotted the steak, salmon, and chicken. She looked at it hungrily.
"Hungry?" I asked with a chuckle.
"Am I?! Let's eat," she smiled, taking me by the hand and dragging be along behind her.
I blushed at the gesture. She ended up getting loads of salmon and she was now wolfing it down.
"This...... Is...... Delicious!" She exclaimed between bites.
My this girl was strange. But that's why I liked her as much as I do.
"Hey, what were you saying earlier?" She asked me.
I then got nervous all over again.
"Oh! That? Oh! It was- uh... HEY let's dance!" I distracted her.But failed.
"Come on, Diner Boy," she scooted her seat up, "tell me."
I sighed and got up, taking her hand and leading her to the lake. We stood there under the tree, and I took a deep breath...
"Fiona... I..."
