Alex's P.O.V

I knew the mermaids and mermen were out there, seeing the occasional fin flip out of the water....

But I never saw the shimmering purple tail that belonged to Fiona...

I waited for her to return to the shore...

Days turned to weeks....

Weeks turned to months....

Now it has been a year.

My hope is now slowly disappearing... She said she would be back return....

But... She hasn't.

I've tried to forget about her by flirting with other girls and that stuff, but nothing is working...

All the girls I've met are nothing like her.

Fiona was special. Her gift won my heart over, even if I didn't accept it at first.

My heart was aching for her to come back, but I knew she wouldn't...

After all... She was free now.

She deserved to be out there. Not on land.

As much as I wanted her to stay here with me, it would never be fair to her.

So now here I am, still working at the Lakeside Tavern.
I got promoted to sometimes work the register, but as of now I'm wiping tables, remembering how fun this chore was with Fiona.

Now it was dull and boring like it always was before she came along.

"Say Alex, where is that red head girl you dated for awhile last year? Rough break up?" Mr. Baxter, the manager asked me.

My heart twisted at the sound of her name.

"Oh... Uh.. She moved away," I replied truthfully.

"Ah. I see. But hey now you shouldn't be sulking around like this... I mean there are plenty of other fish in the sea. It's been a year, Alex... It's time to move on," he said.

I kept my mouth shut and wiped the tables down harder.

Just because she wasn't coming back doesn't mean that I have to forget about her.

*******

The sky was now a darkish purple and it was closing time.

"Lock up for me, son?" Mr. Baxter asked.

"Yes sir," I nodded, switching off the lights and closing the restaurant door behind me, twisting the key to lock it.

I walked to work today, so I had to walk back in the somewhat chilly, fall air.

I trudged by the lake and froze, looking out to the glistening water.

Oh how I wished she would come back.

My eyes filled with tears.

She said she would return....

I sighed, finally letting go.

I would never forget her, but boss was right. It was time to move on...

I would miss her dearly though.

I sighed again and continued my slow walk back to my house.

It was then when I heard a splash.

My head snapped to the direction of the sound.
The moon lit the water as I saw large ripples in the dark lake.

I didn't breathe.

I didn't move.

It was then when I saw a large fin flip out from the water.

Through the darkness of the night, I couldn't make out the color of it...

But as soon as it hit the moon's rays, I saw.

Purple. A deep, shimmering purple that I still dream about to this very day. That one shade of purple that made me practically melt when I saw it contrast against her bright red hair.

My jaw dropped as I saw a head poke up from the water and dive down again.

She was swimming to the dock!

I sprinted over to the marina, almost slipping off the wooden boards, and I made it to the edge.

I dropped down onto my knees and gripped the edge of the dock with my hands.

My eyes scanned over the glistening lake water.

She was here.

She was really here.

"Come out... Come on it's me... Please don't leave..." I whispered to myself through the silence of the night.

It was then when I saw bubbles floating up to the surface.

My eyes sparkled in the way they always do when Fiona is around.

I then saw a murky image of a face....

No....

It was her face.

Fiona poked her head up from underwater, taking a gasp of air.

She then opened her ice blue eyes and looked into my brown eyes.

I was speechless... And so was she.

It had been so long.

She reached her wet hand out from the water and put it over mine. I interlocked our fingers together.

Her hair was longer and waiver, her swimsuit had faded, but her tribal necklace held strong, her tail looked so much more muscular than it had before, and her eyes looked even prettier than ever.

"F-Fiona?" I got out breathlessly.

"I told you I would return," she replied in a whisper, smiling back at me.
