The next day too, I remained at home and the next day too, Valencia came over to check on me. We chatted for a while until she asked me a stressful question.
"I had this thought going through my mind since a few days now...That night at the party, you said that you wanted to be my only friend. What did you mean by that?" she asked pressingly.
I gulped and thought to myself, "I can't tell her I meant that I want to be the closest person to her. It'll sound very awkward and make me seem very weird."
I then faked, "Huh? I said something like that?"
"Yeah, you did. You don't remember?"
"Nope. I was drunk! I must've said things that I didn't think through."
"Hmm." She smiled.
I lied down onto my bed, leaving the other side vacant, expecting Valencia to lie beside me. In a moment, she did.
"I really like your company." I admitted.
"That's uh- sweet of you. I do too." She replied while gazing into my eyes. "Let's do this thing. Ask me a question and I'll answer it and you gotta do the same."
"Sounds fun. You go first though." I implied.
"Hmm." She thought. "Okay, what are three things that happened in the last week that you're thankful for?"
"Woah, last week huh, it was rough."
"I know, that's why I am asking you to introspect and kind of, look for the good in it."
"I see. So first, Caleb. He's a dick and makes me wanna cry but his dick motives taught me a lesson, taught me to be more careful while falling for a person."
"Oh, okay."
"Second..." I thought. "I don't know Andrew maybe? He gave me an insight about Caleb? And third, Rachel and Anne. For how they helped me through this thing."
"That's your problem",
Valencia shrugged and gave me a bored look. "You keep inserting Caleb into everything, in every topic and expect yourself to move on? It don't work that way, Skylar."
"I know, but-"
"It's hard. I understand. We'll get through it, together." She suggested.
"Together?" I asked.
"Your chance of asking a question."
"Okay...uhm, what's your ideal weekend?"
"I like to hang out with friends, finish up my assignments, go out on a beach maybe", Valencia laughed, "I'd like to spend time with you", she softened, "Sleep in maybe."
"Sleep...with me?" I said as my face turned warm and lines grew on my forehead.
"Oh shit. No! I meant sleep in....and not wake up on time in the morning! Alone! The sequencing of my statements was not in order, I'm sorry!"
I chuckled. "Calm down. I understood, I was just kidding."
"A relief." sighed Valencia. "Now next...is there any challenge you've been having at school, maybe I could advice you on it?"
"Well, algebra. Can you help with me with that?"
"Why not? I'm moderately good at it, so yes!"
"Finally someone." I chuckled. "Okay, so, uh- do you have a favorite...quote?"
"I guess, yah."
"What is it?"
"If you love somebody, tell them today."
"Wow." I simpered. "So, you love someone."
"Yeah, maybe."
"Uh- but you told me that day that you don't even like anyone."
"Well, yeah, but I did say that my feelings are a mess too."
I chortled, "So who's that...whom you maybe- love?"
"I don't tell anybody about it. I'm close to five people, which includes you, and I've told neither."
So I was somebody close to her.
"But have you told them today, that you love them?"
Valencia laughed. "No way! I've got no guts."
"Awh, poor you." I laughed in return. "So why that quote?"
"It encourages me, to tell them. Everyday, I think of them as I wake up, and believe that one day, they'll be by my side while we wake up, together, and that maybe, that very morning I woke up, I'll rush to them to tell them how much I love them. But then again, I have no guts."
I gaped at her and said as turned towards her, "Valencia, don't mind me, but you are so romantic. I mean how deeply can one think into this quote!"
"It's not a quote, actually." Val simpered. "I just...made it up. It's just how I feel."
"Now tell me! That's even cuter!"
All of a sudden, Valencia's phone rang. She got up, it was her mom. She was asking Val to come back home immediately, since her dad and Val's brother, Samuel, were there to meet them. Her face turned pale after receiving the call. I held her hand, in an attempt to comfort her, but it didn't seem to work.
"Val, talk to me, what are you feeling?" I asked.
"I- I'm- not sure. I haven't met Samuel in a year. He used to be my best buddy and-" She spoke weakly and gulped. I reached in for a hug and held her tightly.
"You'll be fine, okay? If anything happens, I'll be there. I am here, always here when you need something. You'll be fine."
"Skylar, I lo- I am so thankful for you."
I smiled as she picked up her things and left. Did she wanna say that she loved me? Would've been cheesy, right?..as friends? Maybe that's why she didn't go on, I guess.
I watched her from my window as she strolled back, hastily. I fell back onto my bed, only to continue thinking about her. Her scent had remained on my sheets and her touch lingered onto my skin. I napped for a while right before I decided to go out for a run.
