Chapter Two

The Last Happy Moment

One Week after they spoke with Energy

"Not going swimming eh?" John asked standing next to me. We stood next to a barbecue as John was making burgers for lunch. The team, including Betty were swimming in a pond nearby, all except for John, Ace and I.

I took a sip from the drink I had in my hand, a mix of rum and soda in a red solo cup. This little vacation was Izzy's idea, which was frankly the only reason I agreed to it. She figured we deserved a day to celebrate the victory over Arnold Kenway, and everything else we did over the last few months. 

I shook my head. "Nah, not really much of a water guy" I smiled summoning a small flame on the end of my fingertip.

John laughed, starting to flip the burgers. "Yeah I guess so, hey Ace! What about you I thought you were waterproof?" John asked calling over to the cyborg who sat nearby on a lawn chair. Ace was wearing a hoodie and basketball shorts, he also wore a set of sunglasses, and despite the amount of drinks I saw the man down today he still walked towards us in a straight line.

"Nah, Tyler claims that I'm water resistant, besides I'm kinda over the idea of swimming nowadays. Seems like a waste of time" Ace mumbled, then shrugged. "Drinks are nice however" He spoke downing the half of the drink he had left in his cup.

"With the robotic liver I barely feel anything right now" He smiled. "Blessing and a curse"

John started taking the burgers off of the plate, I saw the smile fade from his face, he was thinking again.

"What you thinking about? Is it Echo again?" I asked.

John nodded. "Yeah, after we saw Energy last week my memories of Project Mutant have been coming back, combine that with what Betty told me about Echo, him murdering Ally and Freddy for there powers. I'm just afraid we might have another Arnold Kenway or Tony Blade level of threat on our hands"

I rolled my eyes. "We've been dealing with thugs for months John, Echo is just one guy, even with those extra powers I could punch him into submission in my Bullisk Form, and if that doesn't work we have Andrew over there" I spoke gesturing over to Andrew in the pond. 

John nodded. "Yeah, who is untrained and uncontrollable. Jack, maybe we should rethink the whole Energy thing, I know you have issues trusting people but come on, we shouldn't pass this" 

I nodded, I knew I acted harsh and wasn't thinking for the long term, especially because we know there is a massive threat coming to our universe, Jayce warned us of the very same thing. 

"Yeah, okay, if he wants to go he can. I don't like the idea of him going alone, but I also don't like the idea of us all going. As you said, Echo is out there, and someone has to be here and ready for that" I explained.

John placed the last burger on the plate and shouted. "Food's ready!"

One by one the others started coming out of the water, Izzy teleporting right to my side, she swung a arm around me with a big smile across her face.

"Hey Jack, how are ya? No water for you today eh?" She asked.

I grabbed a towel from a chair nearby and wrapped it around her.

"Yeah, no, how many drinks have you had?" I laughed. Izzy accepted the towel and wiped her face a little with it.

"No, I'm fine. Just happy I guess" She grinned.

"Well, serious up guys" John started. "Jack and I just talked, and we decided that we want to send Andrew to train with Energy, but we don't want him to go alone, so, any volunteers?" John asked looking around the group.
