"Don't torture yourself over it, love. There was nothing we could do for the blighter, and the last thing we want to do is stick around and get drawn into a police investigation." John said.
Jade couldn't understand how all of this didn't phase him. Years of experience do diminish one's capacity for compassion, but not to this extent.
That man died and if they were quicker, maybe they could have saved him. John didn't seem to care about it and he only looked ahead. Although that was reasonable, it still felt wrong to ignore what happened.
"I don't understand. What was in the car?" Zed asked.
Whatever it was, it wasn't human. From what Jade had seen, it looked as if though two hands had been trying to choke John and the driver.
However, how the car filled up with water or how it was able to kill the driver is something she couldn't decipher. Despite all that she has seen, it felt as if though she still didn't know anything about this world.
"That's the price of doing business with yours truly. I tried to warn you." John replied.
Once again, he didn't seem phased by what he had seen or the fact that he was almost murdered. Jade didn't understand the exorcist, but she knew that if she wanted to survive, John Constantine was her best bet.
Despite his attempts to keep the two women away, all he did was lure them in. For whatever reason, Jade felt safer around someone who knew what they were doing. She didn't and neither did Zed.
"We're still here, aren't we? We want to know more about our abilities and if helping you with this thing means we'll get to learn more about ourselves then so be it." Jade said.
John said she needs to know more than just a levitation trick. It's not like there's anyone else who can teach her how to use her powers.
If she sticks by his side, he could teach her to protect herself from anyone who might want her gone. She thought meeting Zed was a gift, but maybe it was all to lead Jade to John.
"Piss off. There's nothing to look at." John grumbled to onlookers.
A few strangers from the street gave him odd looks for being covered in dried mud. Jade and Zed didn't look much better although there was considerably less mud on them.
They didn't seem to care about the attention on them though unlike John who was growing tired of suspicious looks.
"What's going on?" Zed asked referring to the mine.
"Back home, our miners call them Coblynau. You see them in every culture. They're the spirits of dead miners, they knock on walls to warn of danger." John explained.
So not only are there demons in this world, there are also spirits. From what John said, Jade could only assume that there were also evil spirits.
These ones didn't sound so bad if they were protecting the miners. With all of these collapses, it makes sense why they would knock to warn of danger. At least it made sense to Jade.
"So these Coblynau, they're protecting the miners? They warn them of danger instead of causing it?" Zed asked.
Like Jade, she was starting to realize these spirits aren't evil or at least they weren't before. John seemed pleased with the way Zed was connecting all the puzzle pieces.
She and Jade might be of greater use than he anticipated. They did prove useful in this investigation so far. John wondered how much more they could take without freaking out or running away.
"That's right. Traditional Coblynau, they never rise to the surface and they certainly don't murder." John said.
Jade thought about his words. If they don't kill, then why are there so many deaths connected to them? According to John, they're supposed to be protectors of some kind.
