Lane hadn't missed so many days of school, but it was okay. She didn't mind at all. Staying home all day with Dan was like a dream she never thought was possible. Lane and Dan sat at the table playing cards. Occasionally their hands would touch and Lane would feel a jolt of adrenaline and electricity. She pretended she didn't notice and kept playing. Except the fact that it was torture!
"Six." Dan said.
"Are you kidding me?" She looked up at the card he was holding. She slammed the cards down on the table as Dan started to laugh.
"Sorry, rules are rules!" He laughed more, making Lane laugh with him. He grabbed for the cards and started to shuffle,
"Hey! It's my turn to shuffle the deck." Lane held her side from laughing.
"Oh yeah, sorry I forgot." He reached across the table and handed her the deck. He was still laughing, but when his fingers brushed against Lane's, they both stopped laughing. With the deck halfway in her hand and halfway in Dan's they stood like that frozen. Dan looked up at her and they had moment of silence. Until Lane cleared her throat and took the deck, blushing. Dan put his hands behind his head and leaned back, watching Lane nervously shuffle the deck.
"When does school start again after Memorial Day?" He closed his eyes.
"It started today actually."
He popped open his eyes. "And you didn't tell me?" He sat up and rubbed his face with one hand.
"Sorry." She started to hand out the cards.
"Lane, what would your mother say?" He placed his palms flat on the table and leaned forward.
"She's not here." She looked up at him, his face was inches away from hers. She so badly wanted to run her hands through his hair and bring his face to hers.
"Lane," He cupped her face with his hands, it sent sparks of electricity through her whole body.
"What?" She knew she was ruining the moment, but she wanted to know what he was going to say, going to do.
"You're going to school tomorrow, okay?"
Lane sat back, disappointed. He let her go.
"I don't want to go back to my mom's house. Not right now."
"Okay, I'll drive you to school tomorrow and then pick you up after, okay?"
"Fine," She shook her head, "Pinky promise?" She stuck out her smallest finger.
"Pinky promise." He intertwined their fingers, and sent electricity throughout Lane's body. She felt like she was going to faint.
"So want to play nine this time?"
