Noel sat on a bench at the near by park next to her office building. She closed her eyes and took in the breeze as she comforted herself in the seasonal change. Autumn was soon in the air and it brought a warm smile to her face. It was one of few things that has these days. Her argument with Taehyung lingered and they have yet to speak.
They exchanged brief words here and there to keep up the pretenses of their living arrangement. Sometimes a "hi" or "bye" would occur, but only to elude the awkwardness beforehand. Her ability to maintain the silent treatment began warding off and now cries have replaced it but never in his presence.
Her wonder of his feelings circled her with each moment a tear would fall. Noel's thoughts ringed with questions of if he hid everything to escape his hurt. She thought they would be different.
Noel chastised herself daily on the almost slip of her feelings. Relieved she didn't complete the three worded phrase, but there was an ounce of her that wished she did as umbrellas of scenarios made her wonder what if and would it anchored them with a different and better present?
However, the one possibility he could never return the sentiment raised high on the pedestal of doubt. Her tears betrayed her again.
"N-Noel?" the familiar voice called out as she rushed a sniffle. She squinted at the figured approaching her, heart pulsating every inch they became closer. "You look lonely. Would you like some company?" They offered.
Noel shrugged, allowing the person clearance for their visit.
He smiled at her, but she focused on the walks of life that passed them by. "Nice day, huh?"
"Yeah." Her reply hollowed a coldness, only to blanket her sadness.
His attention was now to her, as he could sense something circling. "Wanna tell me what's bothering you?"
"You wouldn't be interested, Jin." Noel muttered.
A doting smirk tugged on Jin's lips while briefly closing his eyes and opening them once, realizing the object of Noel's thoughts. "So, is this about the best friend?" He inquired. Noel lowered her gaze as she fidgeted with her fingers. "Hmph-or is it more appropriate to refer to him as your boyfriend?" Jin corrected.
Noel's heart swelled, pondering where this conversation may lead, even if it is one she's dodged for quite some time. A harsh yank on her lip almost broke her skin as her nerves capered throughout her body before her attention fell on Jin. A hard 'yes' rolled from her lips, mirroring the stare she emitted.
Jin scoffed. "I'm right then. You chose him after all, huh? I guess you finally admitted the truth to yourself."
Noel frowned. "What truth?"
"You rarely mentioned your roommate to me. He was never there when I'm around. You would spend more time at my place than I yours. Do you see where I'm going here, Noel?"
Noel shook her head. "I didn't hide him from you or you from him. I just..." She sighed. "-never mind."
"You didn't want to choose." Jin stated. "I get you two are close. Maybe you were closer than you wanted to admit. Seems as if since he had someone, you didn't have to worry about your feelings surfacing. Is this why you wanted us the way we were? Did you ever have feelings for me?" He wondered.
The replay of Noel's argument with Taehyung was suddenly on repeat in her thoughts. A heat coursed her as if she was reliving the night all over again. "Please don't think I never cared for you, Jin. We were pretty much in a non-committed relationship for over six months." Noel explained.
"I never doubted your care, Noel. Truth is, you couldn't love me because you were already in love with someone else." A tiny hitch of breath caught in the clutches of Noel's throat as a lone tear fell. Her lips slightly parted, her stare never straying away from Jin's. "Noel?" Jin placed his hands on hers, reminding her to breathe from the contact.
"I-I'm sorry Jin. I never meant to..." Noel trembled out, but the labyrinth of feelings tussled around in her thoughts sent a calming wonder while the weight of them lifted away. It silenced her and he understood her. She felt a meekness for his generosity.
Jin lifted her hand to lips, kissing it softly and smiling. "All that matters is you're happy, okay?"
"You mean that, Jin?" Noel's voice timid with curiosity.
"Of course I do. We'll always be friends regardless, right?" Noel nodded as Jin released her hand before walking away, leaving her with new tears of relief.
