Damage

I don't know if I've ever mentioned this before, but I figure that Mitch and Kirstin's songs in this story are some of Pentatonix's songs, Superfruit's songs, and Kirstin's songs. The above song is the song they are singing in the concert.

"Well," Kirstin said, "On the upside, now you know that he's crazy, and you can stop liking him."

Mitch sighed. "I can stop liking him," he agreed. "But it's still awful. And I can't help but like him."

"Then, you try again," said Kirstin. "Maybe eventually, he'll agree. If it doesn't work, then you ask why. We'll figure out what to do from there."

Mitch nodded. "Okay," he said, "But here's the thing. I can't really ask again, because there's been too much damage done to my sense of pride."

"Oh," said Kirstin. "So, this is a dignity problem. You respect yourself, so you can't do anything to risk that self-respect. But, here's the issue with that: you have a wounded sense of pride, but asking him again would heal that sense of pride, would it not?"

"Only if he says yes," said Mitch. "And I really doubt that he will."

"How come?" asked Kirstin. "He said no before, sure, but it doesn't matter. He could say yes, if you asked again."

Mitch considered that for a moment. Then he just shook his head. "No," he said.

That evening

Scott groaned a bit as he sat down on his bed. "Why?" he whispered to himself. "WHY would you say no? Idiot!"

He curled into a ball, wishing to cry, but no tears came.

Scott sighed. He knew that he couldn't beat himself up over it forever, but he wanted to. He had been interested in Mitch.

Maybe I should apologize and explain, he thought to himself. But no, he couldn't do that. Sighing again, he uncurled, and pulled his blankets over himself. He stretched, then turned over to go to sleep. He would sleep well; he hadn't slept much lately. That was why he was going to bed earlier than usual.

What he didn't know was that, while he slept peacefully, Mitch was having to perform while heartbroken and distracted. Which never ends well.

While Scott sleeps obliviously

Mitch smiled as Kirstin was singing. He sang only in the background in this song. Kirstie got a solo. It was a beautiful song.

As the song finished, the crowd started cheering. Kirstin grinned; then she said, "You know, I'm actually really excited for this next song. Do you want to know why?"

The audience responded with excited screams. Kirstin said, "I'll take that as a yes. So, I'm excited because Mitch solos in it, and he sounds like a beautiful baby angel. So, hopefully you guys will agree with me!"

Mitch smirked as he got up. He was trying hard not to smile, but it was difficult.

Mitch approached the front of the stage. He couldn't fight his nerves. His mind was elsewhere. He couldn't force it to the concert. He knew that he couldn't perform tonight as well as he normally could. That wasn't okay, but he knew what he was doing. He would perform correctly, but not with energy. He wouldn't feel the music. But he would be fine.

Kirstin walked to the piano and sat down. She didn't play yet, but she would later in the song.

Mitch, meanwhile, stood at the front of the stage. "Hi," he said.
