Together

Mitch sighed when Scott caught up to him in the hallway.

It wasn't that he had anything against Scott; the big, blond teddy bear was just clingy.

"What is it, Scotland?" Mitch asked.

"Okay, so here's the thing," Scott began. "You came to high school wanting a high school experience, right? Well, graduation is part of the high school experience."

"It's an unnecessary part," Mitch told him.

"It's a part."

Mitch sighed. Scott really wasn't going to give up, was he? "I'll go," he said, and he almost gave in at the delighted look on Scott's face. "I'll do it," he continued, lowering his voice. Half of Martin High School didn't need to know their plan. "On one condition."

"What is that condition?" Scott asked.

"You do what I want," Mitch said.

Scott considered this. "Deal."

"Thank you," Mitch said, satisfied.

_

Scott knew what Mitch wanted. The brunette had tried to convince him to do it several times.

He was nervous, of course. He'd never done anything of this sort before.

The studio where Mitch and Kirstin recorded was familiar to him, but it seemed like a much scarier place when Scott was about to work with them.

"It's just one song," Mitch told him.

"'Shallow is a great song, and it fits your voice so well, so don't be nervous," Kirstin told him. "People will love you!"

"Kitty, don't tell him not to be nervous," Mitch said. "Of course he's scared." He wrapped his arms lovingly around Scott's neck. "And it's fine," he whispered.

Scott smiled down at his boyfriend. "I'll be fine, since you're there," he whispered back.

"Yes, you will," Mitch said, nodding.

_

After being told to start, Scott licked his lips anxiously. Mitch was watching him, a smile on his lips. That smile was the only encouragement Scott needed--the only encouragement he ever needed.

After only another moment of hesitating, he started to sing.

Tell me somethin', girl.
Are you happy in this modern world?
Or do you need more?
Is there somethin' else you're searchin' for?

The others joined him on the next part of the song.

I'm falling.
In all the good times I find myself
Longin' for change.
And in the bad times I fear myself.

Scott smiled. He could get through this. Kirstin started to sing after another moment.

Tell me something, boy
Aren't you tired tryin' to fill that void?
Or do you need more?
Ain't it hard keeping it so hardcore?

He closed his eyes, joining her and Mitch on the next part of the song.

I'm falling
In all the good times I find myself
Longing for a change
And in the bad times I fear myself
I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in
I'll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us
We're far from the shallow now.

They continued singing, and finished the song before long.

When they had finally finished singing, they all listened to it together.

"I think it's good," Mitch said.

"I think so, too," Kirstin agreed.

"I guess it's good," Scott said. "You guys sounded amazing."

"We did, but so did you!" Mitch said.

"Okay," Scott said, unconvinced.

"Scott, I will make you listen to your part of that song on repeat and with headphones until you say it's good," Mitch said forcefully.

Scott cringed. "Okay, it was good," he said.

"Yes, it was," Mitch said, smiling again. "Now, when will we do the music video?"

_

They did the music video a few days after recording the song. They all had gold somewhere on them, and this was the only color, as well as various gold things around the room. The rest was black and white.

Scott loved the music video. It was so pretty. He decided that he couldn't wait for people to see it.

_

When they released the video, Scott decided that he would not look at the comments.

"Baby, you should see their reactions!" Mitch said. "They think you did amazing. They love you. They think correctly."

"Some of them," Kirstin murmured, looking at her laptop.

"Oh, be quiet, Kit," Mitch said.

"What do you mean?" Scott demanded, looking at her screen.

There were a bunch of views and comments already, even though it was only uploaded a couple of days ago. Scott decided to ignore how many million people had watched it.

He looked at the comment Kirstie pointed out to him.

I definitely prefer it when you two sing alone. This is the first time I've clicked dislike on one of your videos. I don't like the other guy's voice, and I don't see why some people do. You're all crazy; Mitch and Kirstie sound like angels. They don't sound their age. The other guy does, and he doesn't sound good with you two. Or at all. But, you do you, I guess.

"Okay, but let's look at the replies to that," Mitch said.

They looked at the replies. Most were telling the person off, but Scott focused on one in particular.

Thank you! I thought I was the only person who thought that. They sound good when it's just them. This guy's voice clashes too much with their voices.

Scott looked to Mitch for guidance. The singer only shrugged and sighed. "Baby, even we get hate sometimes," he said. "But there is so much positivity in this comments section. So, just focus on that. There will always be people who don't like you. And how boring would that be? Imagine if everyone liked you."

He was right. "Okay," Scott whispered.

"I have to say," Kirstie told them, "This is the first hateful comment I've noticed on this video."

"I agree," Mitch said. "People really like you, Scott. I mean, almost all of the comments are praising you up and down!" He chuckled. "Kit and I are getting sort of jealous."

Scott smiled. "So," he said. "You'll come to graduation?"

"We both will," Kirstie confirmed.

"Yep," Mitch said, smiling. "We'll do graduation the way I hope to do the rest of life: together."

***

Okay, I had no idea how to end this thing, but I wanted the last word to be together, and my mind just basically spat out that last sentence and I thought it was really sweet.

This will only have a couple more chapters, by the way.
