Chapter 18

“Tee…” Kimmon managed to utter his best friend’s name as he saw him lying on the hospital bed. Kimmon’s hands shook with fear and he felt his knees getting weak. He wanted to go near his friend but he was scared until Tee gave him a weak smile.

“Hey Kim.” Tee spoke softly to his friend.

Kimmon walked towards Tee and tried to put to words everything he was feeling inside. Yet he failed to do so and started stammering. “I… I’m sorry… I wasn’t able to… Last night I… I didn’t answer your call and…”

“It’s okay Kimmon. I’m fine now.” Tee assured his friend and placed his hand on Kimmon’s. “Even though you weren’t there… I’m fine…”

At those words, Kimmon felt his heart sink. He was supposed to feel relieved that Tee was already fine but Kimmon felt the opposite.

All his life he was there for Tee, but last night, when his friend needed him most, he wasn’t there. Just because he was too busy denying his feelings for Tee. Kimmon knew deep down that he had already fallen for his friend but he was scared to admit it.

Yet now his friend says he’s fine without him.

That was scarier for Kimmon, but he didn’t see that coming. Before he knew it, he was too late.

Present day…

“Hey, what’s troubling you?” Tee asked as he sat next to his best friend who was looking at the beach like it did something very wrong to him.

“Nothing.”

Tee breathed in deeply. He knew that it would be very hard for Kimmon to tell someone all his troubles. Kimmon was the type of guy that liked to distance himself from everyone whenever he had problems. It was very rare for him to open up to someone and Tee knew that.

“Want to get some ice cream?” Tee invited which tempted his friend to look his way.

“Just…” Kimmon started but hesitated afterwards. “…the two of us?”

Tee nodded in reply.

“Where’s your boyfriend?” Kimmon asked as he furrowed his eyebrows.

“He’s playing with his brothers. So what do you say? My treat.”

It was very tempting indeed. Ever since Tee started going out with Tae, Kimmon had not spent any time alone with his best friend. Plus, it was Tee’s treat.

“It’s bad to say no to free food.” Kimmon said which made Tee chuckle.

Tee stood up and brushed the sand off his shorts. “Wait for me right here. I’ll go get my wallet then let’s go to the store afterwards.”

Kimmon nodded with a smile and watched Tee walk away. And when Tee was gone, thoughts of Copter immediately filled his brain.

Kimmon scrunched up his face and buried his hands in his hair. “Darn it. My brain is hurting from thinking too much.”

Before Kimmon could think of hitting his head, he felt something cold hit him on the side.

It was Tae and Bas playing with water guns. Bas suddenly grabbed Kimmon and used him as a shield which made Tae spray water on him.

“Oops, sorry about that.” Tae apologized.

“Where’s your other brother?” Kimmon asked.

“Who?”

Kimmon internally facepalmed. It wasn’t like Tae had a lot of brothers for him to not know which brother Kimmon meant. Copter was the only one who wasn’t there so it was pretty obvious that the other brother Kimmon meant was Copter. There was no reason to ask ‘who’. Tae was obviously the dumb one in their family, Kimmon thought.

“Phi Copter said he wasn’t in the mood to play with us.” Bas replied. “Coward.”

“Huh?” Kimmon asked. He felt like it was him that Bas called a coward but he wasn’t quite sure.

“I meant phi Copter. I’m sure he was just afraid that he’d lose so he didn’t want to join.”

Kimmon raised an eyebrow and slowly nodded. “Right…”

Tae walked towards Kimmon to ask him something but Bas kept on spraying water at him that he got angry and told his brother to either sit quietly or collect shells and don’t disturb him and Kimmon for a while.

Bas pouted as he still wanted to play but nevertheless listened to his brother and sat quietly.

“Kimmon…” Tae started and narrowed his eyes at his friend. “Did you have a fight with my brother?”

Kimmon placed a fake smile on his face. “No.”

“Coward.” Bas spoke again. This time, Kimmon was sure Bas glared at him for a while when the younger one said that.

“I meant these tiny crabs here.” Bas said as he played with the crabs.

Tae cleared his throat to turn Kimmon’s attention back to him. And when his friend had already taken his eyes off his brother, Tae spoke again. “Are you sure? The atmosphere between you guys seemed pretty off and—”

“Coward.”

Tae and Kimmon looked at Bas again.

“Seriously why do you keep saying that?” Tae scolded his brother but his brother’s eyes were glued on Kimmon.

Kimmon’s eyebrows drew together. And once again, the younger one silently mouthed the word ‘coward’, his eyes almost shooting lasers to Kimmon, then ran away.

“That brat! I’m sorry Kim.” Tae said and chased after his brother.

“What did I miss?” Tee asked as he arrived, already bringing his wallet with him.

Kimmon turned to his friend and scratched the back of his head. “Umm… your boyfriend… and his brother…”

“Yeah, I can see that.” Tee answered as he watched Tae chasing after his younger brother and shooting water at each other. “I guess they’re having fun, huh? Come on Kim. Let’s have some fun too and eat all the ice cream there until we get diabetes.”

Kimmon bit his lips, hesitation all over his face.

“What’s wrong?” Tee asked.

“Umm… I think… I’ll have to pass. I’m sorry Tee.” Kimmon said and dashed away, his feet taking him to someone who's become more important than his best friend.
