The First Night

I walk alongside Reila after her dinner with Prince Zen as I lead her to the room she will be staying in during her stay here. I noticed that throughout the day they'd gotten a little more comfortable with each other but so far it's definitely not love. She hasn't said much either but she seems happy enough.

"Did you have a good day, Miss?" I ask as I look down at her.

The top of her head only comes to my shoulder. It's cute.

"Very much so, Mitsuhide, Sir."

"Please, just call me Mitsuhide. There's no need to be formal, Miss."

"Then please call me Reila or Rei." She smiles up at me. "I saw a peculiar young man earlier today but was unable to speak with him. Do you know who he was? He had dark hair and golden eyes."

I sigh softly as I realize exactly who she's talking about and notice him perched in a window up ahead.

"Miss Reila, meet Obi. He is another of Prince Zen's aides."

Obi's eyes flick open and land on us, his expression a friendly smile, but the look in his eyes is mischievous and definitely not innocent. He stretches like a cat as he gets to his feet and moves to stand in front of her. He takes her hand as he bows and kisses it. I feel like I will have to keep him away from her after this, if Zen doesn't kill him first.

"It's an honour to meet you, Miss."

Reila's face is turning red as he smiles up at her before he straightens. Obi is definitely going to be an issue.

"I-It's nice to meet you, Obi." She stutters out, making his smirk grow as he meets my eyes.

"It's late, Miss Reila. I'm sure you would like some rest after your busy day."

"Oh, yes. Thank you Mitsuhide. Goodnight, Obi."

"Goodnight Miss. Sweet dreams."

I cast him a look over my shoulder as I lead her to her room. From there, I bid her a goodnight and tell her that I'll meet with her again in the morning.

"Goodnight Mitsuhide."

I turn back to her and smile. "Goodnight Miss Reila."

I find Prince Zen in his office half asleep with a stack of papers in front of him. I shut the door and he jolts upright, leaving a streak of ink across his cheek. I suppress a chuckle as I ask how his day went. He shrugs and reminds me that it was all a formality, that he holds no interest in her.

"I'm aware of that, but perhaps you could make a new friend out of this?"

"Reila doesn't talk much, so I'm not sure. She wasn't hard to get along with though. What do you think of her?"

I straighten and look up at him. "What?"

"You were around her as well. What are your thoughts on her?"

"Oh, she seems nice. Not as stuffy as the other girls were but I think she's still nervous. I do hold some concern over Obi though."

Zen sighs. "What did he do?"

"Nothing inappropriate, yet. I think he's taken a curious interest in her so there is a chance he will cause trouble."

"As uninterested in marrying her as I am, it would reflect poorly on our kingdom if he does anything to make her uncomfortable during her stay."

"Don't worry Master, I wouldn't dream of laying a finger on Miss Reila." We both turn to find Obi lounging in the window. "I just wanted a chance to greet the newest Miss."

"Just be aware of your actions and words around her. If you cause any trouble, I will lock you in the castle until her stay is over."

Obi's eyes widen before he laughs. "That's definitely a punishment worse than torture."

Reila isn't in her room when Prince Zen asks me to escort her to breakfast. I'd run into Shirayuki and asked her to check, so I wouldn't be intruding if she were indecent, but the room was empty. I thank the redhead before wondering where the blonde could have gone. As far as I know, she hasn't particularly gone anywhere or met with many people since she arrived yesterday... Obi better not be involved with this. My gaze studies each window and tree I pass in search of the dark haired nuisance. Even if he isn't involved in her disappearance, I guarantee he would know where she is. I find him absently hanging upside down from a branch by his ankle. I'm not sure if it's on purpose, but he seems to be resigned to his fate regardless.

"Have you seen Miss Reila this morning?"

He twists his head to look up at me with a coy smirk. "Lost track of the Miss already? For shame, Mitsuhide."

"Just answer the question... Also, what are you doing?"

"Just... hanging around." He chuckles. "But yes, I have seen Miss Reila today. She's actually the reason I'm in this current predicament."

"Where is she now?"

"I'll tell you if you help me..."

I sigh and latch onto his ankle and pull him free before letting go. He scrambles to catch himself on a lower limb before climbing back up to face me.

"Rude... Last I knew she was on the way to the library, but that was before dawn."

I enter the seldom used library and head for the series of tables they had set up, but they're all empty. The couches around the hearth are vacant as well. Since it was so early, there is a good chance that Reila isn't here anymore. I sigh and turn to leave but a guard approaches me.

"I wasn't sure what to do, so I decided to keep watch over her. I noticed a young woman asleep in here when I did my first round."

"Where is she now?"

I follow the man through the aisles of books until we come upon Reila asleep on the floor, her back resting against a shelf with a book still open in her lap.

"Thank you for watching over her. She's a visitor of Prince Zen's."

I dismiss the man before wondering how exactly I should go about waking her. I don't want to startle her. She looks so peaceful. I reach out and gently brush her hair out of her eyes.

"Am I interrupting?"
