Poison

I brought Reila into the pharmacy while the men were being dragged off and I set Obi on the task of finding the dagger he dropped when Reila tried to escape. The herbalists might be able to use it to help her. I explained the situation to Garak who immediately had Shirayuki pull blood to test while they wait for the dagger to be found. I can tell that Reila is internally panicking but she's trying to hide it. I'm completely terrified but I'm not going to show it, that would only make it worse for her. She tries to smile at me from the bed they've got her resting in but it's wobbly at best.

"It's going to be okay." She tells me but it almost sounds like she's trying more so to convince herself than anything. "Shirayuki and the others know what they're doing."

"You'll be out of here in no time and you can go back to avoiding Garak."

Her face pales and I sigh. "She's behind me, isn't she?"

"What's wrong with me, Mitsuhide? I recall having to save your life a few times over the years."

"It's not his fault." Reila cuts in, saving me. "You just frighten me a little, Ma'am..."

"That means I'm doing something right." Garak grins. "But my job is to help people, not to hurt them, so don't worry. I just wanted to let you know that Obi has brought the dagger so we have started testing it to see if there is any trace of the poison left on the blade. The men who took you have refused to identify the poison, but we will figure it out and get the antidote to you. For now, just rest, but remember the different symptoms and tests I told you to keep track of. Let us know if something happens."

Garak leads Reila through different tests like guiding her eyes, wiggling fingers and toes, and asking questions. So far nothing has happened that we can tell.

It's been two hours with no answer on what the poison is yet. They were able to pull some of it from a groove in the blade but they're still trying to figure out what it is. I've been trying to keep her entertained and her mind off of what's going on but it's only working so much. Zen came when he heard what happened and has since been with the guards for interrogation. The whole incident was somehow kept relatively quiet for now, so as far as he knows, Izana and her father don't know what happened or that Reila is at the castle. Hopefully it stays that way. There's still the matter of Lord Gerron's son hiring those two men to abduct Reila. I'm curious to know how they found her.

"What are you thinking about?" She asks softly as she stares up at me.

"Nothing Miss Reila."

"You're lying to me... Please don't do that."

"I don't want to trouble you further, that's all. It's nothing to concern yourself over."

"Mitsuhide... I-I can't breathe."

I get to my feet as she starts to gasp for breath and immediately head toward the door.

"We need help in here!"

I'm shoved aside as Garak comes in with Ryuu in tow and they start to work on her while relaying notes to Shirayuki to narrow down the poisons. They'd told me to leave the room so I can't see anything but their commentary to Shirayuki has me really concerned. They've mentioned convulsions as well. I didn't expect it to hit her so suddenly since the first two hours were fine. Based off what that man said, she has three hours left. They have to hurry and save her. Obi comes in and I hear him ask what's happening but I don't answer him.

"Have they said anything?" I ask instead.

"Still nothing."

I stare at the door separating me from Reila, then look toward the door separating me from the castle. Garak and Ryuu enter the room and tell me that they have her restrained for now but there's not much they can do until they figure out the poison.

"Keep looking. I'll be back soon."

Obi follows me, to my annoyance, as I make my way down to the holding cells. I am not going to lose her because of those men. If Garak and Shirayuki can't find the poison on their own, I'll get the answer my own way.

"I'm guessing she's getting worse?" Obi asks from beside me.

"It hit all at once. She couldn't breathe and started convulsing. She was fine for two hours. That Tiren guy said she had five... How do you know them?"

"Previous connections." He scowls. "I hated them. Twins creep me out but they are skilled when it comes to poisons. There's no telling what they came up with."

"Well one of them is going to talk or else. I'm not going to lose her because of them."

"Have you told her? If something-"

"Don't. Don't even finish that sentence. Reila will be fine. We will find out the poison and the antidote will be made. Where is Zen?"

"Last I knew he was still here with the squad leader for interrogation."

"Perfect."

I grab a fistful of Tiren's hair and slam his face into the wall before demanding to know what the poison is again. To my surprise, Zen allowed Obi and I to be alone with the twins. He's with Tave in the next cell and from what I'm hearing, it's going about as well as it is over here. Tiren laughs instead of answering me.

"Why do you care so much, lap dog?" He snickers.

"Just tell me what it is."

"You won't kill me. You're a man of your word, remember? I have nothing to fear."

I release his hair and grab his throat instead.

"I won't kill you, but I will make your life a living hell until you beg me for death." I growl. "What poison did you use?"

I start to squeeze tighter as he stares me down defiantly.

"Mitsuhide, let's go... Mitsuhide, you're wasting time. I got the answer."

I'm shoved into the wall and Tiren escapes my grip as he hits the floor, gasping for breath. I glare at Obi but he repeats that he got the answer from Tave and Reila needs me. I wanted him to suffer like Reila is. I wanted him to fear for his life like she feared for her own. I glare down at Tiren as I follow Obi out of the cell and stop in front of Tave's. He looks a lot worse than I imagined, but it's to be expected with Obi's past.

"If you're lying, I will paint this cell with your blood."
