"Did you kiss her?"
I jump and turn to find Obi staring at me through the window, stretched out on a tree limb. I'd just left from walking Reila back to her room for the night. We spent the time up until dinner in the library as she read, then again afterward. I was still on edge but I wasn't as flustered as I was whenever we were in her room. The kiss completely threw me off though. I never expected she would do that. I'm sure my face was red for at least an hour afterward.
"I don't think that's any of your concern." I mumble and his grin falls.
"So... that's a no." He sighs as he climbs in the window. "Why didn't you kiss her you idiot!? You like her. You know that, I know that, I'm sure some random butterfly passing by the two of you knew that! So why not? I did not force you into attacking me for you to just not doing anything."
"I didn't ask you to do any of that though. That's on you. I'm not going to do something just because you want it to happen."
"What is your hesitation, Mitsuhide? She's not going to be around forever." He calls after me as I push past him toward my room.
"That's the point, Obi. She's leaving at the end of this no matter what. Why burden her or myself further?"
"That's why you kiss her now!" He hisses as he smacks the back of my head. "You may not end up together but you still have a month to spend with her if you don't mess around and miss your chance."
"I don't want to spend a month with her, then have to say goodbye and never see her again. It's going to be hard enough saying goodbye with her as we are now."
"But what if she likes you back and you two end up as precious little sweethearts?" He croons and I shove him into the wall.
"Do you forget that she is the daughter of a Lord and is set to marry another man of her status or higher? I work for one of those, I'm not one."
"Rules are meant to be broken sometimes." He sighs.
"It's not my rule to break."
I manage to leave Obi behind and I close the door to my room and sigh. I knew Reila's arrival was going to be interesting, but I thought it would simply be tolerating her and teasing Zen about it. I didn't realize that it was going to be falling for her and having to ignore it. I shake my head to clear my thoughts and start to remove my sword and other gear. I doubt it, but maybe I can get some sleep tonight. As I begin to pull my shirt off, I hear a knock on the door. That better not be Obi...
"Obi, I swear if you're here to bother me about Rei-" I trail off as I open the door to reveal Reila. "Miss?"
Her eyes are glued to me and her cheeks are tinted red, but she's not looking at my face. I realize a moment later that my shirt is open. I pull it closed and begin to button it again, pulling her from whatever thoughts she had going on.
"Is something wrong, Miss Reila?"
"O-Oh, sorry. I just-" her face turns red again as she glances at my chest before looking away again. "-anyway... I-I'm sorry to bother you. You need to sleep, I'm going to just go."
I reach out and gently catch her hand as she starts to walk away. I tense at the fact I'm holding her hand but I don't let go and she doesn't pull away.
"You had to have come here for a reason. I don't mind that you're here, I just need to know why so I can help."
Her hand squeezes mine for a second before she sighs.
"I-I had a bad dream and I couldn't fall asleep again... I tried reading but it wasn't the same. I think I got used to you hanging around in the library with me."
I let go of her hand and move back into my room to grab my sword. Though we'll still be in the castle, I'd rather not be without it.
"Oh, no, you don't have to come with me Mitsuhide. I'll be okay, you need to get your sleep." She mumbles from the doorway.
"It's alright Miss Reila. I have a habit of falling asleep in there anyway so it will be fine."
That makes her giggle as she agrees with me.
I follow Reila to the library and we settle on the couch after she picks up the book she'd left on the table. When she opens it, I notice that she'd only gotten a page or two in. I figured that she would have gotten farther along before she came in search of me. She closes the book again a moment later and turns toward me.
"I ran into Obi on my way to find you." Oh no.
"Oh, really?"
"It was most peculiar, actually."
I avoid her gaze burning into the side of my face. I don't know if Obi said anything but I feel like I'm in trouble.
"What is it, Miss?"
"I noticed that Obi's lip was split and slightly bruised. It wasn't like that when I left him in the gardens. When I left you before that, you were uninjured. Now you both are injured. Such a strange coincidence, isn't it?"
"V-Very."
"Mitsuhide, you are a bad liar." She sighs. "What happened?"
"A small disagreement between friends. It's since been resolved so don't worry." I answer.
"Shame on both of you. What could possibly be important enough to jeopardize your friendship over?" You.
"Please don't concern yourself, Miss. I promise that things are settled and our friendship is fine. You should be relaxing." I tell her as I stretch.
