I hear a feminine voice somewhere on the grounds below through the open window and sigh as I turn around. Shirayuki is supposed to be on bed rest since it's nearing the end of her pregnancy but she's waddling toward the greenhouses with her exasperated companion in tow. Her companion is the one I can hear, reminding her that she shouldn't be out of bed and that Zen would be mad if he knew.
"Your wife doesn't listen very well, does she?" I chuckle, looking back toward Zen.
"When has she ever?" He sighs. "Shouldn't your wife be watching over her?"
"She is." I turn my gaze back to the window to find Reila guiding Shirayuki by the hand back toward the castle despite the redhead's protests. "I'm still not sure your reasoning with assigning her to watch over Shirayuki."
"They're both very stubborn, but they even each other out. They both think with their heads and hearts both, but what one lacks the other makes up for. Reila is less impulsive so she keeps Shirayuki from blindly jumping into things while Shirayuki draws Reila out of her comfort zone."
"That makes sense."
It's been five years since Reila came back to the castle as a knight and Zen hired her as an attendant to Shirayuki since he'd properly proposed to her while Reila was gone. I'd proposed to Reila two years later and we got married just over a year and a half ago. Obi was overly excited about all of it but still relentlessly bugged both of us that we could have been together and married for much longer if either of us had just confessed sooner.
The door opens and I turn from the window to find Shirayuki and Reila walking in. Reila looks exhausted but she makes her way over to lean against the wall beside me and rests her head on my shoulder as Zen and Shirayuki talk.
"That woman is going to be the death of me." Reila mumbles under her breath. "The only way she was willing to not go to the greenhouses anymore was if I let her come see Zen. I told her that she had to sit the whole time though." She says the last part louder as she steps away to pull a chair up to the desk and Shirayuki sits in it.
Reila returns to the wall and asks me why I get the easy one to look after.
"He is definitely not the easy one." I sigh. "I've had to save him from poisoned apples at one point."
"I could use a poisoned apple right about now..."
"I think one poisoning is enough for a lifetime, darling." I brush my finger along the thin scar on her throat where the man poisoned her in the failed kidnapping years ago.
"Well, if it does happen, I know you'd find a way to save me."
"Oh, Reila, I told you to remind me of something but I can't remember what it was." Shirayuki says and Reila stiffens and shakes her head.
"Why don't you and Mitsuhide take a short walk and see if you can remember it." The redhead gives her a pointed look and I'm not quite sure what she's talking about but it's strange.
Reila shoots her a look in return but pulls me out of the room in silence. We end up in the library and I pull her into a kiss as soon as we're out of sight of the doors. I'm not sure what's going on but I'll use the bit of privacy to my advantage. Reila breaks the kiss as I try to deepen it and she leads me into the depths of the library to a hidden alcove we frequented. I arch a brow and tell her that we don't have time but she smacks my chest lightly.
"I need to tell you something important... I wasn't sure yet but Shirayuki wouldn't let it go."
"Is that what her poor acting was about?" I chuckle and she nods. "So, what is it?"
As I wait for her answer, I lean against the wall and watch her expressions shift and her face pale slightly.
"I- uh, well we... I..." She takes a deep breath and exhales softly. "Mitsuhide... I'm pregnant."
My heart stops and my brain shuts down for a moment as the words leave her lips. "What? How?"
"I'm pregnant... When a man and a woman love each other very much-"
I pull her into a kiss, cutting off her likely inappropriate explanation.
"We're going to be parents! I'm going to be a father... Dear God I love you so much."
She smiles and pulls me closer as she leans back against the wall.
"I love you too Mitsuhide."
"You know, I do think we might have a few minutes to spare before we have to go back..." I mumble as I trail kisses down her throat.
"I think we do." She smirks as her fingers mess with the buttons on my shirt.
"I swear it used to be fun to find you guys just holding hands or something... but now I find this. It's a bit too much even for me."
"Then go away Obi." She calls out without looking up.
"Trust me, I'm going... Congratulations by the way! Name it after me."
I sigh and grab a book off the nearby shelf and toss it over my shoulder, smirking as I hear a thud and his fading complaints as he walks away.
A/N: This is the end! I loved writing this. Have new Snow White books in the works so stay tuned!<3 -H
