{Colbys POV}

I stood by Sams locker, waiting to see his familiar tuft off blonde hair meandering through the crowd. I didn't have to wait long, soon I saw his small body pushing carefully through the hustles of students blocking the corridor. He looked up, his striking blue eyes meeting mine as a smile played on both our lips. He continued walking over to me, quickening his pace a little. When he got to me he smiled wider and opened his locker, beginning to put his stuff into it.
"Hey," i grinned.
"Hi," he said cheerily, shutting his locker and looking up at me. Without thinking, I reached out and swiped a stray hair that was hanging in front of his eyes back behind his ear. His eyes met mine, and I watched as a bright blush spread across his pale face, making me smile. I'm pretty sure I was blushing too, but I didn't mind.
"Listen, about last night I -"
"You don't need to explain. What happened, happened. Let's just forget it, yeah?" I interpreted. He stared at me, his innocent blue eyes wide as he nodded.
"Good, anyways I need to ask you something," I continued, beginning to walk to registration, (I'm sorry idk how American schools work lmao) and beckoned him to follow me. He did, walking beside me.
"What's that?" He asked.
"Well, tonight the fairgrounds gonna be up in town. I was wondering if you wanted to go with me," I told him, my fingers knitting together as I awaited his answer.
"Colby I-"
"Don't say it. You have to be home by 8 i know. It starts at 4, so I can have you home by, lets say 6," I said, turning to glance at him.
"So, you wanna come with me?" I repeated.
"What, like a date?" He joked, a little giggle escaping his lips which made me smile.
"If you want it to be."
I froze. Did I really just say that. Wow Colby. You are so smart, NOT. Sam looked up at me, his blue eyes searching mine curiously.
"I would," he whispered, so quietly I thought i'd imagined it. I smiled at him, our eyes locked together and not moving.
"That's good, or else I would have just looked like a right idiot," I spoke. Sam laughed, his eyes lighting up with what only could be described as pure happiness. I smiled too, saying bye before I walked into registration.

{time skip to 3:45}

I jogged up to Sams front door, ringing the doorbell and waiting. I'd told Sam i'd pick him up at 3:45, and to my surprise, and probably his, I was on time. After a moment, the door opened, revealing Sam's mum.
"Colby, hi. Come on in," she smiled, opening the door wider so I could step inside.
"Sam! Colby's here!" Mrs Golbach called.
"He's probably not ready, I'm usually late every time we hang out ," I chuckled. Sams mum laughed too, her eyes fond as she looked at me.
"But, I'm guessing this isn't just any normal 'hang out'" she smiled knowingly. I blushed, eyes shooting to the floor in embarrassment.
"No... did he tell you?" I asked, fiddling with my fingers.
"I guessed. It's plain obvious he's head over heels for you. It didn't take me long to put two and two together," mrs golbach smiled, causing me to finally meet her eyes again.
"Treat him well, Colby," she smiled at me. I nodded, before I heard footsteps bounding down the stairs. Sam was walking down them towards us, a smile on his lips. Mrs golbach quickly bent towards me, whispering "when you see the shadows, keep him close," in my ear. I furrowed my brows, looking at her quizingly.
Sam was next to me now, and his eyes were so full of light it made my heart burst.
"Well, have fun boys. I'll see you at 6. No later please," sams mum told us.
"Yep, yep we know," Sam groaned jokingly, before leading us both out the house. I followed him, waving goodbye to Mrs Golbach before the two us started walking down the path away from his house.

We reached the fair, the bright lights dazzling our eyes as we went in.
"Woah.." Sam breathed, glancing around at all the rides.
"What? You never been to a fair before?" I joked.
Sam shook his head, and my jaw dropped open.
"What? That's it, we're doing everything,"
I said excitingly, and Sam laughed along with me.
We walked around for a bit, and when we reached the large helter skelter I saw Sam's eyes light up.
"Wanna ride that?" I asked, to which he nodded furiously. I smiled fondly, and we started to walk over to the line. As we were walking, I felt something brush my hand, and it took me a moment to realise that it was sams fingertips brushing against mine. I giggled, taking the blonde boys hint and interlocking our fingers. Sam smiled contently, looking up at me with admiration filled eyes. We got to the cue, and we only had to wait about 5 minutes before we got to go in. I paid for the tickets and led Sam up the stairs off the helter skelter, still holding his hand. We reached the top, and Sams grip on my hand tightened.
"Scared?" I joked, and Sam rolled his eyes at me.
"It's just a slide, Sammy. You'll be fine," I smiled, bumping his shoulder with mine. He playfully bumped me back, a shy smile playing on his lips.
Soon, it was our turn.
"You going first?" I asked, glancing at Sam.
"No, I'll go last," Sam decided, and I nodded, taking the mat and sitting down at the top of the slide.
"See you down there," I grinned, pushing myself hard so I went flying down the slide with some speed. Before I knew it I was at the bottom, standing up and placing my mat on the pile. I stood and waited for Sam, laughing when he flew of the end of the slide and onto the mat below. He was laughing too, as he stood up and brushed himself off. He put his mat back on the pile and rushed over to me, his hand slipping right back into mine. "Where too now?" I asked, glancing down at Sam.
"Ummmm, I know," Sam smiled, pointing over to a small tent not too far away. It was a face painting tent, and I giggled as Sam started dragging me over to it. "You have to do it too Colbs," he decided, his eyes shining with happiness as we joined the cue. "Sure," I laughed, flinging my arms around his shoulders. He giggled, his hand coming up to play with my fingers that were dangling down by his chest. Soon it was our turn, and we had to go to different sides of the tent to get our faces done. I opted for a small wilting rose on my cheek. When it was done, it actually looked really good. I thanked the lady, standing up and turning around. Sam was standing up at the exact same time, and I smiled. He had a small crescent moon painted on his cheekbone, and I couldn't help but laugh.
"I like yours," he giggled, his gentle hand coming up and brushing across the rose on my cheek.
"And I like yours," I grinned, grabbing his hand and waking out the tent.

We spent the next hour or so playing fun fairground games and riding rides, and now it was half 5.
"I think we have time for one more ride," I decided, glancing around to look for anything we hadn't done yet.
"Hey, what about the Ferris wheel?" Sam asked, pointing to it. I nodded, starting to walk over to it, Sam doing the same. We got in the cue, my hand digging out some change from my pocket ready to exchange for tickets. I happily gave over my money and me and Sam seared ourselves in one off the carriages.
"Is this gonna be scary?" Sam asked, once the man had pushed the handlebars away.
"Nah," I smiled fondly. Sam nodded, and jumped when the ride started up. It went upwards at a nice and slow pace, and the nervousness on sams face dissolved into nothing as he glanced out at the fairground. "Like it?" I asked, as he peered over the edge.
"Definitely," Sam breathed. Soon the ride reached the top, and stopped. Sam smiled, jokily waving to one of the people down below. I laughed at him, watching him with soft eyes. "I kinda like it up here,"
Sam decided, turning to look at me. I raised my eyebrows.
"Oh yeah?" I asked, and slowly began to shake the carriage.
"Colby!" Sam shouted, gripping the handle bars in front. I laughed, stopping what I was doing and turning to face him. He did the same, and our faces ended up inches apart. I smiled dreamily at the blonde boy in front off me; my heart pumping ferociously in chest.
"I'm glad you came out tonight," I smiled.
Sam smiled back, and his face slowly got closer to mine.
"Me too," he responded. I glanced down at his lips and then back up to his eyes, almost asking permission. He just rolled his eyes fondly, leaning forward and pressing his lips to mine. I smiled, my hand reaching up to cup his cheek as I kissed him back. It was a pure, innocent moment, something i'll treasure with me forever. His cheek was warm beneath my hand, and it just sent an eruption of happiness down my spine. When we eventually pulled away, Sam was grinning like mad, and my face mirrored his. Suddenly, the ride started back up again, lowering us slowly to the safety of the ground before. We both got out, a blush coating both out cheeks as walked back out the fairground. Our hands were interlocked as we started walking home. "Colbs," Sam said into the silence.
"Yeah," I answered.
"Thanks," Sam spoke.
"For what?" I asked.
"For tonight, for everything. For giving me my first kiss...."
I giggled, leaning over and pressing a soft kiss to his temple. Sam smiled, and then looked out. The sun was beginning to set, and for some reason sam was becoming agitated. He was looking around, peering round the corners and jumping every noise. And when we got a little alleyway that led us back to our houses, Sams grip on my hand tightened. The ally way was dark, littered with still shadows.

"When you see the shadows, keep him close."

I remember Mrs Golbach's words, tugging Sam closer to me and keeping a comforting arm around his shoulders as we walked through the ally way. We finally emerged back into the light of street-lamps, but I kept my arm around Sam. He didn't seem to mind. We finally made it back to Sams houses, and I turned to face him. I looked down at his cute little face, my lips curling into a grin.
"I'll see you -"
I cut off the blonde boy by kissing him, out lips moulding together like two puzzle pieces just waiting to be connected. His arms looped around my neck, mine circling around his waist. When I pulled away, he chased my lips. I giggled at him, kissing him again, his hands playing with the hairs the back of my neck. However, our moment was interrupted by a small cough. We pulled apart, only to see Mrs Golbach standing in the doorway.
"Sam, its time to get ready," she smiled. Sam nodded, looking up at me one more time and pecking my lips. I ruffled his hair, and he shoved my hand away jokingly, and then followed his mum inside. Mrs golbach playfully bumped his shoulder, wiggling her eyebrows at her son. Sam glared at her jokingly, before smiling at me one time and shutting the door. I started to walk away, my lips tingling and my heart full of joy.
