Renko observed Chisana from a distance as she worked on cleaning the dining hall. Renko had only fallen for someone once in her entire life. She had obsessive impulses and behaviours just like Kenshin. When she was born, her parents detested the fact that she was a girl. To save themselves from embarrassment, they pretended that they'd given birth to a son.
Renko was forced to be brought up as a boy. Kenshin and her parents were the only ones who knew her true gender. Kenshin had been the only parental figure in her life. Her actual parents hardly cared for her. Kenshin was always there for her, and for as long as she could remember, he was always the one who took care of her, and made sure she was okay.
Renko wasn't sure that these desires she felt for those she loved were genetic or not. Her behaviour almost mimicked Kenshin's when he was with his lover. However, Renko was adamant that there was some differences between hers and Kenshin's behaviour.
Once Kenshin felt the impulses to kill to protect his partner, he just let them control him. Renko felt like she was much more in control of her emotions and knew when to stop.
Renko used to harbour intense feelings for a male who was from another province. He was extremely nice and friendly to her. Whilst he was staying with them, she constantly felt the urge to kill whoever even dared touch him. Somehow, she managed to stay in control of her emotions.
Alas, their relationship never blossomed. The male never knew Renko's true gender or feelings, and before she could even tell him anything, he passed away because of a deadly disease. After this huge heartbreak, Renko thought she'd never feel the same way for anyone ever again. And to be honest with herself, she felt relieved at knowing that. She didn't want to harm anyone. . .
But after watching Chisana work tirelessly in the castle, and talking to her just once, she began to feel those twisted feelings inside of her slowly growing once again. These feelings were similar to those she felt for that precious boy who passed away. She didn't even know Chisana that well yet. . .
Renko knew killing was wrong. She hated the sight of blood and dead bodies. She hated the way her brother dealt with his enemies or people who angered him. She wanted to be different from her brother. . . She didn't want to be like him.
Unlike Kenshin, she believed that she'd be less harsh with those who she loved. If she felt the desires to kill someone, she'd simply take herself away from the situation before she acted out. She didn't want to be seen by their people as a senseless murderer. Kenshin already gained the title of blood-thirsty killer. She wasn't going to join him.
Renko wanted to talk more to Chisana. . . So far, they'd only chatted once. And that was when she revealed the truth about her gender to Chisana. Apart from that, she hadn't really said anything more to Chisana. During their last exchange, Renko ended up getting extremely flustered despite being the one to introduce herself to Chisana and she hurried away mid-conversation because she wanted to deny she felt anything towards Chisana.
Once telling her the truth, Chisana was oddly understanding. . . And it made her only like the maid even more.
Right now, she was trying to hold herself back. She didn't want to fall. She didn't realise that it was too late. Her feelings had already taken root inside her heart.
It was love at first sight. She knew that her love might get to a dangerous extent. She both wanted to form a relationship with Chisana yet she didn't. Kenshin was dating a man, so Kenshin most likely would see no issues in her dating a girl. . . Anyway, most people thought she was the youngest lord. None of them knew who she really was. . . So, they wouldn't suspect that she was dating someone who was the same gender as her.
