Congratulations to every little girl and boy with an imagination. Mermaids are, in fact, real creatures. Unluckily for those children, and the unfortunate beings who dive too deep, they will kill you on-sight. These creatures are beautiful but unforgiving and unkind. Due to the lack of care and attention to the ocean and other bodies of water where they live, Mermaid societies have ordered a kill-order to anybody from the land. For the most part, they leave boats alone, allowing for fishing rigs to go unharmed. However, if there is too much by-catch or over-fishing, they will likely topple the boat and drag the "land-dwellers" to their deaths. They are increasingly furious about the pollution of their waters.

Mermaids were once kind and compassionate creatures. There are depictions of them in storybooks, guiding sailors to safety. Sometimes they would come to land themselves. Now, however, they are enemies of nearly every state. Regardless, they have an honorary seat on every council. On occasion, they demand a meeting with a representative, usually to angrily discuss the state of their habitats. They usually send a scribe to speak for their monarchy (always being a matriarchy).

Mermaids live in colonies, also known as pods, led by the princesses of the Queen. They typically reside in the Mediterranean but have spread far and wide. All princesses and the Queen have male consorts, capable of leading in the absence of the female, however, they will likely die before the Queen or others ever need their help. Males have short life spans, really only living for breeding and secretarial jobs.

The tails of these creatures are usually blue, green, or black (in order to match their surroundings). Of the pods that live in more tropical waters, their tails are usually paler, sometimes flecked with oranges, reds, and yellows. The monarchy passed down a rare color in their tails. Purple. The shades of purple are indicative of royalty, alongside their rosy irises. Commonplace eye colors include brown, blue, yellow, grey, green, orange, and red. Red and orange most often are found amongst nobles in their courts but can go to their citizens as well.

In the ancient days, the sea-species honored their sea gods of all kinds, Poseidon, Neptune, Mazu, Tefnut, and several others, depending on their location. They would accept the gifts from land-farers during their celebrations and take them to their sea temples. Together, several species came together as one and honored the water's abilities, including the agricultural gifts it bestowed. Celebrations could last days, a week even. However, those days are long gone, and the culture of mermaids is now unknown.
