Merlin
There is no real proof Merlin has ever existed. However, his legacy lives within the hearts and minds of all witches and wizards across the globe. Whether or not he is fact or fiction, there are some things we know that have stayed consistent amongst magicians.
Merlin was a young boy in the service of King Arthur Pendragon. His magick went largely unnoticed, as Merlin made a point to remain hidden. His friendship with the king ensured a powerful reign for as long as the Pendragon lived. Even after his death, it is said that Merlin protected the land where Arthur once reigned. If the late King knew of Merlin's magick, it is unknown to scholars and historians who have scoured the legends.
It is also told that Merlin and Morgana le Fey were once close friends turned enemies. Morgana's uncontrollable appetite for power brought her to make several attempts on the King's life, his kingdom, and on Merlin himself. There were many retellings of the few great battles between Merlin and Morgana that nearly resulted in their discovery by mortals. Morgana was feared, especially when she recruited a young druid named Mordred, who grew to be the death of Arthur and his kingdom.
Nearly all myths have told of Merlin living forever, incapable of death by natural causes. His magick is greater than any other known sorcerer. Even in his old age- in which he is described to have a great white beard and possibly a pointed hat- people believe he is capable of leveling a nation in one swift movement. Merlin is also one of the most notable Dragon Lords. Little is known about his communications with dragons, but in his time when they flew more freely, it is likely he had befriended several of them. Despite his power, he is thought to be a kind, old man. One of benevolence and second chances. Regardless, legends warn of his stubbornness and the lengths he will go to protect what he loves at all costs.
People across the globe have gone searching for him, usually starting at the grave-site for Nicolas Flamel, in a misguided attempt to make them one-in-the-same. No one has ever found even a single trace of his existence, even after the discovery of King Arthur's remains, which were then moved to an undisclosed location.
Other Notable Names
