Dragons are powerful and large beasts that can breathe fire or ice. They typically span about 63-120 feet in length, and somewhere around 115 feet in height. Their wingspan is approximately 2 ft for every 1 foot in length. Dragons of any breed are typically found usually in East Asia, Scandinavia, and Norway. There are a few dragons found in Africa, historically Egypt, however, they usually live in sanctuaries elsewhere.
The Chinese, Korean, and Japanese dragons all live exactly where their name states. From there, dragons are then referred to by their colors. Common colors include red, green, black, brown. Uncommon colors include blue, yellow, orange, and purple. The rarest is a white dragon. A white dragon typically breathes what is essentially blue fire, the hottest part of a fire. They aren't as large as other dragons, but, in some ways, that works to their advantage.
Dragons do not have linguistic communication abilities, despite television myths. However, Dragon Lords are a 'thing'. They are descendants of the original Dragon Masters who lived alongside the dragons, were able to communicate with them, and were often called upon during times of war from neighboring kingdoms to bring the dragons to battle. The most famous Dragon Lord would be Merlin, though there isn't much information about his role as such. Now, though, the few Dragon Lords remaining work with our magickal zoologists at the sanctuaries across Europe and East Asia.
Dragons are widely hunted creatures of myth. A single scale, talon, horn, tooth, or even feather, can go for great amounts amongst black market dealers. Dragon's blood was found in many cosmetic or medical products, an illegal substance. Luckily, the substance isn't usually the real stuff, but mislabeling a product is illegal anyway. These items can be sold legally (minus the blood), but only in small quantities for educational purposes or wands.
Baby dragons, known as hatchlings, are considerably easier to kidnap for their magick. They are born around 3-4 feet tall, born from 5-foot tall eggs. It takes them a year to learn to fly, another to learn their fire or ice capabilities. They reach full maturity after six years, so people capture them extremely young and, of course, neglect to teach them any skills they'll need. The kidnapping of hatchlings is rare and results in a life-sentence of the offender. In some cases, they return the kidnapped baby to the sanctuary and leave before being caught. Many suspect this is because dragons are tough animals and the babies bite.
These magickal creatures are the "original wielders of fire" according to many of the elemental species, such as Fae. Magickal species have been close friends and protectors of these beasts. Political lobbyists come in to argue in favor of an expansion of sanctuaries or to take further action against black-market thieves and such. They are a protected species under the International Council. The dragon numbers are dwindling, but they are not yet endangered.
