Despite the formal education of magicians across the globe, there are still informal communities known as Hedge Witches. These are magicians of all sorts, creatures too, that come together to practice witchcraft on their own. This is sometimes very dangerous, as their magick is usually free-range and unpredictable. However, this is, legally, an accepted form of coventry.
Covens, or groups of magicians in a magickal bond, run rampant across the globe, especially in places of magickal intolerance. There are some nations that have placed a ban on such practices, however, they are virtually unstoppable. Covens are bound to one another, to protect and to practice. Their combined magick makes their casting much more powerful than if it were an individual. Some covens are less formal with their bond, instead only providing safe spaces for hedge witches to meet, learn, and cast.

In order for most covens and hedges to carry on traditions or suggest effective spells, people often use a Grimoire or Book of Shadows/Spells. These are notebooks, bound books, or even scrapbooks of materials, spells, and personal magick experiences. The meanings of candle flames, colors, herbs are typically written down for use. Some contain the meanings of tarot cards/readings. Others are purely a diary for magicians. Most schools allow grimoires to be used for personal purposes, but even then most do not encourage unsupervised magick until they are graduated or nearing their final years.
Modern witchcraft practices have become a recent trend in the mortal world. Most of the sets that are sold are relatively harmless, but even a mortal can produce a small amount of magick should their intent be strong enough. Intent is what matters the most, after all. That being said, cases including white sage or other native practices should be discouraged for their commodification and colonization of native traditions.
Familiars are also a common trend in the practice of witchcraft. These do not have to be animals, but can also be spirits. In some cases, it is a spiritual possession of an animal, or transfiguration into one. Most magicians are associated with cats, primarily due to their susceptibility to the paranormal. Any animal, though, can be a familiar. With this being said, familiars are tough to come across. Many of those who claim their animal is their familiar are actually incorrect. A close relationship with a pet often gives magicians the wrong impression. To determine if a pet or spirit is a familiar, you may perform a true intent spell on said pet to see if a spirit resides inside. Should there be one, it would cause static and interference in the spell. Otherwise, a pet is just a pet.
