The term changeling is a broad term, simply referring to any mortal, magician, or creature that can transform into an alternate state. There are three important changeling types;

Fae

There are two types of Fae changelings. This first is a child taken by a Fae sprite which will eventually change into a Fae. The other is a naturally born Fae that can become an animal spirit.

Wolves

Wolves, more commonly referred to as werewolves, are a type of natural changeling. With every full moon, they are forced to remain in their wolf form for the remainder of the night. They do, though, have the ability to freely go in and out of their wolf forms outside of the full moon.

Skrimmers

Magicians that complete an illegal ritual have the ability to change into an animal that represents their spirit. This animal is not of their choosing, and they retain most human qualities, unlike wolves which (in and out of wolf form) have animalistic abilities. Once this ritual is complete, it is nearly impossible to break the spell or change the animal form. It is technically possible, however, that requires incredibly strong magick and a change of personal identity so great or dramatic the person's magick is altered at its core.

Any other type of changeling most likely derives from demonic or spiritual possession or black magick. Not all demonic or spiritual possessions are inherently "evil", however, they can sometimes damage the host in unimaginable ways. Other times they simply live alongside the host, in some cases, manifesting their own bodies to follow alongside their victim/host. There aren't many cases of this, mostly because demons and spirits are hard to track. However, it is likely that those that manifest their own bodies are the ones who will not harm their host. Usually, their life-forces are connected at that point.
