So my family decided way back before it was even winter that we were going to go to a cabin for a few days after Christmas just to have fun and play in snow and stuff. A few things happened just before Christmas that almost stopped us going, like my dad developing vertigo, but we decided to go anyway.
We packed up the car, with my mom frantic and stressed like always, and we left. It was only about an hour drive, so we left in the afternoon thinking that we'd get there way before dark. Ha ha ha we didn't.
As we drove, there was more and more snow. The main roads were plowed so that was fine, but then we got out of cell service and began using a little nap to find our cabin. I wasn't paying attention to the driver and navigator because the pine trees and mountains outside were pretty and we were listening to my favorite Harry Potter book, Chamber of Secrets, so I was just chilling. Also I'm fairly bad at navigating, especially when I've never been where we're trying to get to.
We took a turn that we thought we were supposed to go and suddenly hit a ton of snow. We slid around a bit around a corner, tried to go up a small hill, and for completely stuck. Suddenly things were interesting.
All after just trying to drive up a few more times my mom and sister got out of the car and started trying to put on snow chains. I got out of the car too, but they were both in super bad moods so I decided to just let them do their thing. I messed around in the snow and found tracks from some person who had snow shoes and decided to walk this road. Looking back at our very stuck car I didn't blame them.
The show chains were bought for our previous van and were a little too small for our current one, so we didn't actually know if they would work. Everyone else were very tense, but I really wasn't. I knew that there were people in cabins a short walk back down the road who could help us if we needed, and the scenery was very pretty.
The chains did not work to get us up the hill.
Me, my brother (who was wearing shorts and a t-shirt the idiot), my sister, and my dad got out to help push the car the try to get it out of the snow. First we tried to push it up the hill, that did not work. Then we decided we were going to push it down the hill and drive back into town to get better snow chains.
My mom was downright posses at that point, and I was a heck of a lot more scared of her just straight up murdering us than being stuck in the snow and it getting dark. Like I said cabins nearby with people in them.
I offered multiple times to walk back for help, but my mom kept saying I couldn't go because 'you get lost in your own neighborhood I don't want you getting lost out on the middle of nowhere in the snow.' First off, false. I get lost in purpose to better learn the neighborhood, and I always easily find my way home. I'm not an idiot no one has driven on this dang road for days I'll just follow our tracks.
But nope she'd rather have us continue to try to push the car out with three weakling teenagers and a dad with vertigo. Real smart mom, real smart. She actually said that we shouldn't go to the cabin and just go home, but none of us really liked that. My dad had the better idea of pushing the car out, driving back into town, and getting better snow chains and staying in a hotel for the night to try again tomorrow. Yeah I like that better.
The car was not getting unstuck, and my mom was freaking out and not following our directions to continue driving backwards out to the snow to turn around and drive back. She kept claiming that she couldn't see out the back mirrors and my dad kept asking why she couldn't just lean out the window and look that way. Eventually she drove the car into a really feel snow drift and that was it. We were 100% not getting out of that without help.
And finally my mom listened to my idea to go get help. She had to come with me though. Ugh fine.
The entire walk I kept subtly referencing all of the tracks that were on the path, and how I'd guess that the other car tracks were at least a couple of days old compared to ours. I also found dog, squirrel, and human tracks but my mom didn't really care about that. Smothering her reasons for not letting me go alone earlier BEFORE it got dark was that she didn't want me not being able to find my way back. As I looked at the very obvious tracker were leaving I decided that she didn't know that much about snow. She was born in Arizona.
We found a cabin just a few minutes walk along the road. I smelled the wood smoke before I saw it. At first my mom tried to call someone when she noticed she had a small bar of cell service, but it went away so she was forced to knock on the cabin door. A nice lady answered who was wearing an apron that had paint stains on it. She let us come in and we told her that we were stuck in the snow a few minutes walk away and that one do the little kids was sick and dad had vertigo.
She informed us that there was exactly nothing up that road but places for four wheelers and things the drive. We'd made a wrong turn somewhere. while she and my mom talked I looked around. She had a giant black bear pelt on the wall which was awesome and she also had a very hyper dog who seemed very happy to see me.
I was given a flashlight and told to go get everyone else and bring them back so they'd be warm while they figured out what to do. I didn't use the flashlight because I could see just fine. I was having the time of my life at this point. I hadn't really ever been in any sort of crisis before (even though I never really considered this to be a crisis because I knew that there were people nearby who lived here and probably dealt with this all the time and could help) and it was invigorating. I wouldn't preferred it if my mom wasn't screaming at us the whole time, but what can you do?
As I walked back I had a sudden realization that there was literally nobody around but my family ahead and about fiveish people in cabins behind. The antisocial in me was thrilled and I sung a couple of the lyrics of the song stuck in my head very loudly because I knew nobody could hear me. It was great.
When I got back the hazards were on and everyone stuck in the car was miserable. Is neglected to think about how I'd convince my dad to bring everyone else in the snow back to a cabin with people he didn't know. He kept asking me questions that I didn't have answers to, like if we should leave the keys in the car and if we need to keep the hazard lights on. Personally I felt the answer was no to both of those. Why leave the keys?? And from the tracks I didn't think this road got much action so the hazards were pointless and just wasting batteries.
As I was trying to get everyone moving a four wheeler drive up. It was the nice lady coming to help drive people back. She outright laughed when my dad insisted on the hazard lights, but she didn't argue with him. I had to force him to sit on the back of the four wheeler with my very cold brother. My sister right below me and I could walk. The two little sisters and my vertigo dad and shorts wearing brother needed a ride more.
I hadn't been cold this whole time. I do very well in the cold, which is probably why I hate beat so much. If my neck is warm and my hands are warm I'm usually good. I had a scarf and gloves so I was 100% set.
My sister was cold though. And she didn't like the dark so I gave her the flashlight.
We got back to the cabin and the lady's husband offered us some water. They had a lot of bud light in the fridge and I think that made my dad really tense. He didn't seem to trust the guy, and I guess I don't blame him, he probably couldn't even see the guy's face because of his vertigo. My mom and The lady took The four wheeler to go see The situation with the car and then try to find the cabin we were supposed to go to. The guy led us upstairs to the warm part of the house and gave us the TV remote to find a movie on cable. My sister found Despicable Me 3 and I played fetch with the dog while we waited for my mom and the nice lady to get back.
The dog got very hyper with all of these new people to play with and kept freaking out my littlest sister by jumping up on her. It was pretty funny.
Eventually mom and the lady came back and said that They had congressmen with much difficulty, which made us feel a bit better for missing it because the lady lived in the area and couldn't even find it. They had used the four Wheeler to get a lot to the Lightroom the car and bring it back to the cabin.
We borrowed one of their cars and they lead us on the four wheeler to the cabin. Then they took the four wheeler back to get the rest of the luggage and the food. We watched Phineas and Ferb while we waited and we cooked the pizzas we had brought for dinner.
We just left the car there to deal with in the morning. Currently it's morning and they left to go deal with it so I don't know what's gonna happen. All I know is that I was probably the only one enjoying the adventure.
We made it to the cabin in a new and exciting way and got to meet some very friendly people. I call that an absolute win.
So yeah :)
We'll figure out how to get home later, we were planning to stay for three days so we're good.
