Knock knock knock

"Salaam Alaykum." She said walking into the room not waiting for his reply.

"Hanaan is ill, she developed a high fever last night so I need one of the cars key to take her to the hospital." She verballed in one breath. Despite having fleet of cars in the garage, she had to ask for his permission before taking any, this was his rule.

All this while he focused on his laptop not even sparing her a glance. She had already braced herself for what's to come, as this is a matter of her daughter's life. "Please can you at least spare me two minutes of your....." he interrupted her before she could finish her statement.

"Listen woman! I have no time for all these shits, I have a meeting by 10am and you can as well see that I'm busy so do me a favour and leave me this instant." So he heard her all along but decided not to answer.

"Your daughter is sick, is some meeting more important than her health?" Before she could comprehend what was happening, he slapped her across the face making her fall to the tiled floor.

"Wayyo Allah na! (O my God!)" She screamed.

"I see you now talk to me the way you see fit, right? I don't want to know whoever is sick you all can go to hell, I have better things to attend to." She couldn't believe what she just heard, does he even have a heart? His daughter is sick and all he is concerned about is some shitty meeting.

"Please I won't take too long, she needs to see a doctor." She said amidst tears. He was getting impatient with her so, he raised his hand to slap her again.

"Father!" none but one could yell out his name this loud, he abruptly stopped and looked at the figure standing in the doorway. Something about this boy was so unnerving though he doesn't talk much, his piercing cold eyes always make one nervous and puts him on edge.

He stormed out of the room not looking back to the wailing woman behind him. Adnaan walked over to his mother and helped her up to her feet, she briskly walked to her room, took her bag and headed for the kids room.

"Hajara are you in?" She asked as she walked into the room. Hajara is an orphan child who has been staying with Umma since she was 5. After she got married, she took her along to stay with. She's now a grown lady of 20 years and helps in taking care of the kids and house chores pretty well.

"Yes aunty, did Alhaji give you the keys?" She questioned her aunt on the verge of tears.

"No dear he didn't." Hajara knew Alhaji was a mean and rude man and she  thought his non chalant attitude was only towards his wife but, she could see vividly that he doesn't care about his kids one bit.

"Aunty we have to do something quick, her condition is not getting any better." Hajara gestured to the sick child in her hands.

She looked up to the girl with bloodshot eyes thinking of what to do.
"I am tired of arguing with him, even if I do he's never going to listen." She said wiping the dried tears off her face.

"I will take a taxi or tricycle, if he by chance asks of me tell him i took her to the hospital, Okay? Take care of the kids, I won't stay long." She stated taking the child from Hajara's hand who gave her a small smile.

"Maami can I come with?" Adnaan asked with a voice full of concern, she had even forgotten his presence in the room.

"No my boy, stay back with aunt Hajara and take care of Aaliyah, mommy will be back soon." He gave a her a slight nod before walking out of the room.

As she turned to walk out, Hajara called her "Aunty? Please take care, May Allah be with you."

"Aameen." She silently replied before heading out.
