Anne
Gilbert walked beside me as I rolled the bike along. We both were trying to keep conversation but failed to do so. It was hard when we both knew what today was. I had missed him heavily for the two months we were separated. I knew we had planned to write and visit but I broke my heart everytime he had to leave. Gilbert put his hand on my bike stopping us in the middle of our trek home. I was looking down studying the makings of the wheel.
"Anne," he said softer than I'd ever heard his voice become.
"I know," I responded.
"Can you stop staring at the wheel?" he requested.
I looked up to him confused.
"How did you know I was looking at the wheel and not the green grass beneath our very toes?"
"And now you look at me," he said sweetly.
"I could stare at you for an eternity Gilbert Blythe and never have a need to look away."
"Well the snow queen would be devastated now wouldn't she?"
I laughed. I remember the first time he caught me in the middle of my imagination. He presented himself as Gilly the Great. I was Princess Cordelia. It feels like a lifetime ago since I've remembered her name.
"I just hate seeing you go," I said.
"I know. And I hate to leave."
I looked elsewhere to prevent my sadness from becoming me. I looked at Gilbert's chest tracing the details of his clothing.
"I don't like this vest on you," I said flatly.
"I'll make sure to not wear it again," he commented. "You on the other hand look beautiful in everything."
I blushed as I always do. It was only mid morning. His train was departing early tomorrow morning. We only have so much time left. It is truly cruel the way my mind always goes back to how little time I have left with this boy. The only I love more than life itself.
"It is both a blessing and a curse to feel everything so very deeply," I mumbled. "I feel like a part of my soul has loved you since the beginning of everything. Maybe we're from the same star."
"Maybe we are. But you, my dear Anne, you are your own star that shines brighter than any other galaxy."
I know that Gilbert is just trying to be the kind human being that he is. That he is trying to make it easier for the both of us. It was really only becoming more difficult. His loving passages, the poems of love, his endearing writings I treasured. But I needed some way to make it easier.
" Gilbert, I need you to promise me something," I prompted.
"Anything."
"If one day you happen to fall for another, and you are torn between her and I, please don't hold onto me-"
"Anne-"
"Promise me you will love her the way she deserves to be loved, and that you will let me go. Because I think I am more than just an option. I think I deserve to be someone's top priority, to be someone's one and only-"
"You are my one and only Anne. And don't think for a second that you are any less deserving of that. You are my truest love and you should never forget that."
"But if you do-"
"I won't. So no I am not promising to let you go because I refuse to do so. I love you Anne and only you," Gilbert was breathing deeply with each word. "It's never the love that we fear, it's always the nights without it"
I nodded and began to push my bike forward. It stopped again. I groaned spinning towards Gilbert. I was about to raise my voice at him for stopping my bike. Before I could even say a word he captured with his lips. Little did I know myself, it was exactly what I wanted. I pulled away.
"I have something for you. Come with me."Gilbert
I followed my Anne as she led up the stairs of Josephine Berry's residence. She stepped into the room she was staying in. I saw as books sprawled had papers of annotative writing stuck between the pages of the binded novels. Anne lifting a stack of papers up as she pulled out an envelope. She turned to me and opened the envelope. She pulled out a letter and turned it to her and began to read.——————————————————————
Dear Gilbert,
I've been writing my thoughts on pieces of paper, hoping that one day you will read them,Hoping that you're reading this and you're alive. The last letter I got from you, you were in the middle of the war. One of your friends had passed. I am so afraid of whether you will be coming home or not. I really hope you come home Gilbert. I miss you terribly. I shouldn't have let you go back then.
I'm sorry I was confused before,
I'm not anymore
I love you
——————————————————————Anne looked up from the letter. I was still in the same place as always.
"I uhh- I never sent it. But, you should have it."
I stepped to the girl on the verge of tears. I squared with her as a tear escaped her eye. I swiped it away leaving my palm against her cheek. I hated this. I hate goodbyes. It was always so hard. Especially when it was Anne. Bash was easier because he had Delphine to take care off. I was a part of dinner off his plate. But Anne, it was the same feeling I had when I lost my dad. It was like that over and over again. Losing her again and again. But I will not lose her, that is not happening. Not now, not ever. Anne is my everything, she is all I need, all I want. Even if this doctor thing were to disappear. I'd have Anne.
