Aaron
Cole was amazing. I couldn't believe that someone other than myself had the same views. Diana had introduced us. I hadn't known Diana very long, but Gilbert was already wrapped up in his girlfriend's presence. I should have expected it after all, he talked about her all the time. I swear it might've been the only thing we talked about. Aside from classes Anne was a large topic of conversation. Anne was actually something we could bond over. I really liked hearing about her. And Gilbert became nicer when she came into conversation. Almost as if she were right there with him. The minute I met Anne I knew she would exceed what Gilbert told.
I liked to people watch. Listening too was something I quite enjoyed. Gilbert himself was very good at talking non-stop. It was easy to listen to him try and explain things even he didn't quite understand.
I remember one of our late conversations when he was studying for the first of his pre boards, he was talking about Anne. It was calming him. He actually began talking about himself because of it. This conversation was one of the ones that started the truce of our friendship.
"I have been so focused on these stupid journals that don't prove anything rather than writing back to the girl I love," he said pushing his papers off his desk violently as I stepped into our dorm.
"Gilbert? Are you alright?" I asked.
"I- no I'm not okay," Gilbert admitted.
"What can I do?"
Gilbert broke down. Collapsing on his bed with his head in his hands. I set my books down from the library onto my bed. Then going to the floor to pick up his papers. Gilbert just whimpered in defeat. His head raised seeing what I was doing. Stacking his papers and organizing them best I could.
"A-Aaron you don't have to do that," he insisted.
"Its best not to ruin your progress before boards. Talk to me," I asked setting some papers on his desk.
"It's about Anne again. I doubt you care to hear."
"Tell me about her," I smiled. "Whenever you talk of her, you seem to relax."
"You aren't tired of me talking about her?" Gilbert blushed.
"I actually think Anne and I would be Kindred Souls," I said.
"You see she would call it Kindred Spirits."
"Go on."
"We could talk for hours," Gilbert shook his head.
"So, let's talk for hours."
We talked about Anne until dawn. Gilbert talked mostly. Gilbert had paused for a moment. I was waiting for him to continue. His face contorted and he stopped talking. He looked up to me as I was writing.
"I'm sorry Aaron. You should have gone to sleep it is already sunrise and you have your exams today."
"It's alright Gilbert. I don't sleep much anyways."
"I have been a horrible dorm mate to you and I sincerely apologize for any trouble I have caused you Aaron."
"Seriously Blythe, I have had worse roommates than one who only talks of a girl he is obviously in love with. In fact, I believe you have some pre boards to study for and I have a final exam to prepare for. Then we will put in a request to the school board."
"A request for what?"
"More of a notification of leave. We are visiting your Anne soon are we not?"
"That we are," Gilbert smiled going to his desk finally.
That was my most treasured memory of Gilbert and I. He was my dearest friend. Obsessed with his dame but truly a friend. A Kindred Spirit as he said. Now I was in Charlottetown, Gilbert and the people he calls his family. Maybe the same people I will be able to call my family. I wrote in the final pages of my book. I really needed to retain a new one to write upon.
"What is it you write in those pages all day Mr. Marks?" Anne asked in the arms of Gilbert as they danced in the center of the room.
Everyone looked to me as I was finishing a sentence in my book. I hesitated looking to Cole. Cole just laughed as he tucked himself behind his canvas.
"I uhh-"
"Oh please let my friend be Anne," Gilbert blurted.
"Would you like me to detail your thoughts of poor Aaron Marks from your letters Gilbert Blythe?" Anne threatened.
"You wouldn't do that to me would you Carrots?" he pled placing a kiss upon her neck as she giggled.
She pulled away trying to glare at the boy. I immediately kept writing in my pages.
"I memorized them all I'm sure I could recite them from memory," she fought.
"As if you would need to embarrass me with my adolescent writings."
"You are responsible for your written words as I am and was."
"Are you talking about the newspaper?" I piped up.
Anne stopped swaying with Gilbert. She spun her head to me violently. She looked back to Gilbert. Her eyes wide in surprise and near daggers.
"You told him of that!" she squealed slapping gilberts arm.
He grabbed his arm and smiled giddily. I shook my head. He was just digging himself a deeper hole. Though it's not like Anne would leave him in the hole. She was angry but also blushing more than you'd ever imagine.
"I found that story to tell lots of your bravery," he said.
"I found that to be true as well, Miss Anne," I added.
"Please, just Anne is alright Aaron," she said. "And you Mr.Blythe are lucky that I love you or surely you'd be in trouble."
"In trouble with whom? Marilla?"
He was taunting the red haired girl. Anne got frustrated and just shook her head with a smile. She hated it so much that she loved it. That was the teasing. The two of them were in love for sure. Anyone with eyes or ears could see that clearly. She went back to my book which I had just filled to the brim. Closing it a little too loudly. It's what regained her attention on it. I was trying to find the words to explain what it was that I wrote in the pages of my sacred journals.
"Well, Aaron here is studying to become a journalist, a writer more perhaps," Cole said standing from his canvas stealing Anne to dance.
"Cole McKenzie you will not steal my Anne."
"Remember Blythe I am not into girls," Cole winked.
Gilbert went to the piano beside Diana. They played together beautifully. And with the ring of a bell dinner was ready. Diana let Gilbert continue on the piano. Cole detached from Anne and pulled me towards the dining with him. The table came into view for a split moment and then I was pulled in another direction. I stumbled to a stop. Cole just inches from me.
"What are you doing. Dinner is ready," I whispered.
"Just give me a moment."
"You have plenty of moments Cole McKenzie."
"You're funny."
"That I am."
"Oh shut up," he said with a smile.
"Make me."Cole
Aaron Marks. Someone I'd just met this morning but connected with instantly. As if I'd known him a lifetime. Kindred Spirits as we called it. He was one truly. Like Gilbert was to Anne, I think maybe, Aaron was to me. I think Anne knew she felt something for Gilbert at the very start. It was only Ruby and the others that made her condense the way she felt. Until now. But I, we, Aaron and I had no one to keep us apart. And so I could feel how I wanted.
"Oh shut up," I laughed.
"Make me," Aaron taunted.
I raised my eyebrows to him. All Aaron did was smirk. I wasn't one for bold moves. But I found that Aaron was. The next thing I know I am locked lips with the boy in front of me. And It was warm. Everything around me. This was probably just an exaggeration but, I had never been kissed before. So I wondered, was this what Anne or Josephine felt when they found their love. Whenthey finally kissed the one they love. When Anne found Gilbert and Josephine, Gertrude. Finally disconnecting our lips I took a step back. Aaron slipped his hand in with mine.
"Dinner?" he said.
I laughed and nodded. "Dinner."
